We had a quick ride after a passing my test, but we wanted to wait until a nice day and have a proper ride.

A crisp morning but all suited up (with thermal liners back in), went for a ride. With a flask in the top box (getting old), off we went. Aside from a couple of steep inclines that needed dropping down a couple of gears the 125 was absolutely fine. Especially after I changed the pre-load, much better.

Bought a Givi top-box pad which I'll fit later.

Went to my Yamaha dealer, who also hire bikes and arranged to hire an XJ6 (restricted) for a couple of weeks time. Wasn't sure when my licence would arrive. I wanted to try a bigger bike and see how I got on with it before deciding what to do next.

Then got home to find my new licence sitting on the mat waiting for me. So all in all, a fantastic morning.

Sadly one of the T&C's is it must be locked in a garage overnight. I've got a flat Sad otherwise I'd get it for a whole weekend. So I'll get it for the day and see how I get on.

I had a sit on one in the store first to see how they felt, as I've not been on anything other than my 125. It was weird with the seat much lower and a much lower centre of gravity.

You are braver than I am. I passed my mod 2 on the 31st and took my other half for a ride yesterday, but just around the (biggish) grounds of the hospital she works at. Lots of turns (mini roundabouts), stops and slow riding, never above second gear. I found it very hard on the CBF 125. The bike felt *completely* different and very top heavy. (I did set the preload and pumped up the rear a bit.)

She, on the other hand, thought it was a blast -- much easier than she expected. She's hooked.

I'm thinking of doing the same as you -- rent a couple of different bikes for a day and see how I get on before choosing a big bike. I took the test on a 650cc, so not restricted, but I'm still looking for a "small" big bike.

That's how my Mrs was, I was there being very careful and a little scared myself. The first time we did it she thought it was great. Changing the pre-load made a huge difference. You did go the right way? It continually goes round and mine is on the very last 'cliff' before it drops down and builds back up again. Prior to that it was very bouncy and difficult to ride.

The CBF125 is just awesome, I love it. I think we are keeping it regardless, so getting a bigger bike will take a bit longer, but go anywhere, anytime and on fresh air it's excellent.

Inspired, we tried again today, after it stopped raining. It turns out (not surprisingly) that riding around slowly in a parking lot is just about the hardest thing you can do two-up. Riding around town is a *lot* easier. I took her to work and back (she had to drop something off), a several-mile, suburban trip, so lots of roundabouts, 30-40mph roads and one short bit of NSL (single carriageway).

I was very pleasantly surprised at how well the CBF did. I had expected to have real trouble on hills, but I only had to shift down a gear once on a particularly steep incline.

Yeah, your immediate reaction is to try and do some slow speed stuff, forgetting that is one of the things you can struggle with initially 1 up.

As soon as you get going and used to the earlier braking, leaving a bit more room in front and generally being smoother, it's easy. In fact it made me realise where under normal riding i could be better as I was taking more time.

It is easy isn't it, great bike up to 50 (including 2 up just), after that you yearn for a bit more.

Fortunately my current commute the fastest road I go on is a 50mph three lane dual carriageway, so the top speed of the bike is JUST enough to keep me out of bother if I need to push on a bit.

AS much as you love your 125's, when you have ridden a bigger bike 2 up you won't want to go back. You have decent power, a larger seat, better brakes and a more stable bike.

It is just so much easier.

No doubt Thumbs Up

As soon as I've tried the XJ6 we will see!
