got new bike, it was out the back on stand (gs125) and i was curious to try it, so i pulled the throttle and put it in first gear (to make the wheel move..) i left it running and A: dont know how to put it back to neutral, pushing down on gear thingy does nothing and B: the engine cut out and will only start with the choke on, and cuts out after running after about 20 seconds if it isnt revved, any advise as to what a stupid idiot who was too curious has done, would be appreciated (i know im stupid!)

also in first gear should the wheel turn slowly on its own with no revving of the engine....

The gear box from first to neutral is up rather than down. The gear layout will be something like:

5
4
3
2
N(eutral)
1

This means you push down to get to first, up a FULL stroke to second, or up a PART stroke to get to neutral.

I'm assuming you are now starting it in first, get it in neutral and see if that clears all problems first. There should be a light (often green) on the dash which will light when you are in neutral. Switch on the bike, but do not start then try to select neutral.

Naa, you're all good mate. Smile
Gear order sounds ood at first but you get used to it very quickly.

Just remember - that little neutral light may lie occationally so always start with clutch.

Leave the fuel on. Not much point in turning it off. Push the choke back in. That would have flooded the engine. After 15 min or so it should be fine again.

Hi

Do turn the petrol off. If the bike has a leaking needle valve then it will flood while it is parked. Turning the petrol off limits the amount of fuel that can leak past the needle valve.

All the best

Make sure you turn the fuel back on when trying to start or run the bike, otherwise there is no fuel to ignite!

Just turn it off when its not on

If the bike is flooded, put it in neutral and try starting it with full throttle, it should start after a few attempts. The other alternative is to bump start it. Put it in 2nd and run along and let the clutch out.

Generally you will not have such a problem. It is quite rare, but when it does happen it is a total pain. The Bandit did it once when I left the petrol on "prime". Overnight it dumped over 12 litres of petrol through the carbs into the airbox and engine.

Maybe. If you are doing this then take out the spark plug which will allow the fumes to get out more easily (just don't smoke near it).

All the best

Hi

The spark plug goes in to the top of the engine. It will have a cap covering most of it. The cap is probably either black rubber, or dark red plastic with a rubber cover at each end. A thick (5mm diamter) cable will lead from this cap up to the coil (which is probably hidden from view.

If you take the cap off you will find the plug. The bit that will then be visable will be about 2" long. The bottom bit will be metal, with a hex shape (for a plug spanner), with the upper bit being a white porcelain. At the very top there will be a little bit of metal or a little bit of threaded metal.

Hope that describes the spark plug for you.

I would say that 95% likely you have flooded it, and quite probably that is you lack of technique starting it (don't worry, you will get better), made worse by starting and stopping it quite often, plus over using the choke.

All the best

Keith

Turn your lights off before starting as this drains a lot of power from the battery. Some bikes headlights brighten according to how hard they are being revved. Get someone you know with experiance of bikes to come round and show you basic techniques of starting etc that would probably be best to help you.

I will second that. Only give it throttle once it has caught. If you find yourself twisting the throttle as you kick it over then try holding the handlebar just inboard of the throttle, or hold on to the mirror stem.

All the best

Have you been sitting with the engine running and all the lights on? Shocked

This will drain the battery pretty quickly since it is using more power than is being put back in... I did it on the NSR, went out one cold morning to warm it up before heading out, left it running with lights on and 20mins later it died and wouldn't start, and it's hard jump starting with a loaded back pack on in the cold on flat ground, believe me!!!

Now I get into that habit of killing the lights whenever I park, so I won't leave them running next time I start it.
