What sort of power loss you getting up hills? I'm lucky to get over 55 on a medium gradient in 4th gear and getting there is not easy either. It's just not a powerful bike.

As for the gears, has it been sitting a while? A change of oil should see improvements as it did when I had gammy gear changes on mine.

If after oil change it's still noticeably less powerful than before, try cleaning out the carbs/injectors as well. Luckily quite a simple bike to fiddle with, unless all your screws etc are rounded off/seized. Evil or Very Mad

8mph? Laughing That is indeed cause for concern.
Have you checked chain tension as well? Best to check over the bike thoroughly now for all the simple stuff. Do you have a manual for the bike (I know the haynes one is focused on the GN, but has enough on pre-2006 GZ that it's actually quite useful).

too much oil went into the air filter moving from level road to a hill, never make that mistake again ,carb needed a good clean as lots of crap in there, the chain had too much tension.

anyways i was helping my sister move and found an old maintenance manual and instruction book for the unapproachable Norton models 16H,big 4, 18 & ES2 it cost 1 shilling was wondering what year it was, also there was a motor cyclists workshop by torrens of the motorcycle 1947 there a bit tatty but all the pages are there

Hi,

How often do you change your air filter. Mine was last changed march 2009.

Also can you just clean it rather than replace it Question

Alex
