cagiva supercity 125 7speed box selector shaft movement

hi.. (first post in years!)

i aquired another cagiva supercity the otherday and am just giving it some tlc when yesterday i noticed the gear selector shaft has what i would say as excessive inwards and outwards movement and a slight oil leak from the seal around the shaft.

when i push the selector shaft in there are no gears there to select, when i pull it back out i can select gears.
at the moment the previous owner has used an inch and half spacer with a washer eitherside to keep the gear selector shaft in the position to select gears, i know this gear box is now knackered, but is it an easy fix to do, also could it be ok to ride like that?
was just gona get a second hand bottom end and rebuild everything to that but wont be for at least a month or so.

sounds like a circlip or thrust plate has failed on the selector shaft allowing it to pass beyond the selector dogs. as you say if you pull it out it will change gear but if you push it in it wont. not an easy job as depending on engine configuration it may have to be split.
