Replaced the zxr400 rear shock last week as it had popped and pissed its fluid every where.

Banged a zx6r one in, no probs, like a glove

There is no sag, feels a bit hard, rebounds at a decent rate.

The shock has a remote reservoir, a screw setting on the bottom of the shock with 4 settings, and obviously the spring.

Which part is for compression, pre-load, rebound?

And which should i adjust to give me a bit of sag and soften the arse a bit?

preload is what you want to adjust and it is usually two castellated locking rings above the spring. Just loosen the top one, and then turn the bottom one anticlockwise until less thread is showing above it, then tighten the top one. You'll need a decent 'C' spanner to do it.

There should also be an adjuster on the very bottom of the shock, this is for compression damping, try taking that to the softest and work back up.
