Hello my names Martyn I have a 1996 Honda cg alittle wile ago I went through a puddle/pond :-/ and ever since she's been back fireing and juddering a lot and not running how she used to:-/ I got her a new exhaust and shocks, the air filter is damp but i don't think it's that?, I have taken the carb to pieces cleaned it all with cotton bud and air blower thingy lol, also emptied the fuel tank cleaned the fuel filter, she ran ok for abit turned her off and a hour or so later she was running bad again I'm getting a good enough spark and oil is ok got a full tank of fuel, don't think brake pads are rubbing although I did fit new ones last week but I'm sure it's not that, as I say she's popping and back fireing when I speed up and let the throttle go she does it, and iv done what I can think of and I'm now baffled :-/ can anyone help!! And I'm not sure about how the screws on the carb should be ? Can some one help Smile

Probs your problem if its water it will restrict air flow make yourbike run rich and soot your plugs up and cause backfire .air filter should be little moist with oilbut not water.

If the air filter is damp, that needs sorting. If it's a removable foam element, wash it in petrol, let it dry, then lightly oil it. If its a paper element then replace it.

You could try snipping a bit off the HT lead, but you might as well just replace it. HT lead is cheap and you only need a few inches.

Just to explain: If your air filter is clogged with water, air will struggle to get into the carb meaning too much fuel is going to the engine but not enough air which is proven by looking at your black spark plug. Because there is to much fuel, it is going in and then out through the exhaust unburnt. The exhaust is very hot which causes it to burn when it touches the exhaust causing it to 'backfire'.

The other explanation is the spark plug/ht lead failing, which can cause the same symptoms.

I wouldn't worry to much about the water dripping out as the breather tube is doing it's job. In fact it's normal to have some water in your oil if you don't warm the bike up fully. To burn it off just get the bike to full temp. It won't hurt though to change your oil.

im glad everything is getting better Smile im guessing thats the idle mixture screw you're talking about.. do what you were told and undo it 2 full turns. then see how its running by doing a plug chop a idle. this means that you keep it on idle for a couple minutes then kill the ignition. take the plug out and observe the colour. probably dont do it untill you have the new filter and everything because a wet filter will probably alter results.
let us know how it goes Thumbs Up

If the bike was running fine before you went through a puddle, then don't touch the idle mixture screw. Why would you want to make adjustments to an engine that was running fine?

Get the air filter off and run the bike without it. If the bike now runs fine, your air filter is clogged.

If it's the foam type which you oil then getting it wet might restrict it because the oil and water will form an emulsion which will be held in the foam. To clean it, get a bucket of hot water with a good squirt of fairy liquid and wash the foam out thoroughly in the bucket, squeeze out the water and allow to dry, then re-oil, not forgetting to squeeze out the excess oil into a rag or some paper towel.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

What you are referring to is the pilot jet; it controls the first 1/8th of throttle movement. As has already been said, do NOT adjust anything if the bike was running fine prior to the 'puddle' incident.

sorry, what i was meant to say is not to change it unless it isnt running well once he has done everything. hopefully everything will be better once he has finished with the air filter and everything. if not then he should consider tuning it Thumbs Up
