PostPosted: 19:59 - 19 Jun 2012    Post subject: Reg/Rec connector block Reply with quote

Hi All,
Following on from my previous post I've ordered a new rec/reg for my bike and this evening I wanted to remove the old one and get the bike ready.
As expected, I ran into a few issues. The main problem is the connector. It is completely trashed. It's all cracked and has been sealed up with super glue, some of the cabling is bare and the connector was completely fused together.
There was no way the connector block would split so I had to cut it out. So I have 2 questions,

1. Can I replace the connector, either with a similar one or a standard electrical connector block?

2. The 3 white wires that run from the alternator aren't marked, does that mean they can go in any order?

I've included a pic for reference.

Any help or advice gratefully received.
Thanks,
FJ

The three white wires can go in any order, since it's a 3-phase AC generator.

I would say there's likely nothing wrong with your reg/rec, and all of your problems lie right here. You can join the wires permanently with solder or crimps or you can use a 'chocolate block' connector to fit it up. There's no requirement for a plug-in connector it's done for convenience.

Unfortunately, this didn't work. I used those little blue crimp tubes to connect the wires, hooked up my multi-meter and the issue was the same. As soon as I touch the throttle the meter goes mad and goes up to about 18v!

When I connect the new one permanently with some crimps, is there a certain rating I should be going for? I have those tubes (blue and red), and some spade style ones. I also have some bullet ones. However, I don't know their ratings. The cables I had to cut seem quite thick.

Thanks
FJ

I'm gunna try and get the bits I need at lunch today. Does anyone have an idea exactly what I need to use to join the reg/rec to the wiring loom?

Go to a scrap yard and cut one out a car. You can get the wee pins out with a small flat screwdriver. Or you can take that to i think maplans and get new stuff. Plenty online shops where you can buy a new block and pins.

Found some of these connectors on eBay in the end. They're called "3 way latching multi connector's" they cost about a quid each and come with the terminals.

Thanks again
