Posted: 22:02 - 24 Jun 2012 Post subject: Sweating on my first ride on my YBR125 |
 |
|
After the rain finally stopped. I went to my friends house and took out my newly purchased 2009 YBR.
Gave it a good clean out and a quick polish with Mer on the nice shiny bits.
I usually ride a comfortable twist and go (less things to think about), but with my impending A2 licence test to do in a couple of weeks time, i thought that if i got a little 125 to practice on, I could spend more time during my training making sure I am near perfect to pass without having to think about riding.
Well........ I turn the key, put it in to neutral and start her up, let her tick over for a few minutes and turn her off......no problem.
Next, time to get astride.
Kick the side stand up, bike starts rolling backward, pull the front brake. Squeeze the clutch in and start her up. Put it in to gear and ride up and down a couple of times.
Next time i try starting her up, i do the same, neutral, push button, then clutch and into first........ the bike just keeps cutting out.....whats the problem now.......oh kick the side stand up!!!!
Now i'm sweating like crazy.
I just feel as I'm not riding as efficiently as i could.
Problems i found was i couldnt judge where the biting point was, when changing gears and releasing the clutch it was jumping a bit. Not sure when to change gear (am i revving it too much) so on and so on.
Is it just practice i need or shall I wait for the training in a couple of weeks time? I feel as if i'm a danger on the road to other users, ie stalling due to clutch control. ____________________ CBT passed Jan 2011/ Mod 1 passed July 2012/ Mod 2 passed July 2012

As Bruce said, all you need is a bit more practice.
It's all a bit hard and alien at first, but within a week you'll be wondering what you were fussing over
Practice, practice, practice. |

Practise makes perfect as they say.
It might be a good idea to see if there is another rider who you can go out with, watch and learn and see if you can pick up good riding habits. ____________________ Current Ride: Daytona 600 |

clutch control can be a nightmare - but just take your time, and practice
when i first got my bike, i was stalling a good once or twice (some in busy traffic )
it was your first ride on it, just be patient with yourself ____________________ Current: Kawasaki ZL600 Eliminator

The clutch can be a mare to start with but eventually you just kind of remember where the bite is and you'll start just hitting that out of practice. ____________________ Current Bike: 2002 Honda CBR F Sport / Previous Bike: 2005 Honda CBR 125 (R.I.P)

Sounds about right.
Dont know which twist & go's your used to but remember, many of them will have fixed drive or very limited 'variable' ratio and they will basically engage early and stay engaged riding on the 'clutch' on a tall ratio, the variator if it has one only changing that a LITTLE as you reach the peak power revs or roll off the throttle.
Bike with gears has five distinct raio's, and each one will probably halve the gear reduction between wheel and crank, so you will accelerate from 0-20 in first reving to around 10,000rpm, before shiftiung up, knocking revs back to around 5K revs to accelerate from 20-40, and so on up through the box.
You can probably 'short-shift' early from 1st to 2nd, at maybe as little as 10mph, becouse bike has enough power to pull that speed at 1/4 revs.....
Ie you accelerate from 0rpm/0mph to 5000rpm, 10mph, and engage second knocking revs back to 2,500 rpm, barely off tick over, and can then accelerate to 20mph, where you'll be pulling 5K revs again, but short shift to 3rd THEN and revs will be knocked back to 2,500 and at that speed unlikely to have enough power to not bog...
So the 'earliest' shift point will go up the rev range as you go up the gears if that makes sense....
But engine note, with direct drive WILL be unusual...
Auto-cars to manuals are the same; the 'note' doesn't change as much as the engine stays at a much more 'fixed' engine speed, but the 'pitch' changes as it loads up, with an auto, manual both change as the revs increase....
Just ride it and get used to it.
BUT you DONT need to be constantly working the gear-bos, DONT be tempted to keep changing up and down JUST becouse the bike will pull the higher gears at lower speed... use the revs, get used to them.
20/30mph roads you can libe in 2nd maybe 3rd you dont HAVE to keep stirring the box, and DONT do the 'Learner-Lurch' changing down to first before a stop or junction, let it roll up in 2nd, smoothly THEN do your shift down to first for the take-off after.
Go find some-where 'quiet' and have a play. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

You won't pass the A2 by having a shiney bike. Less time polishing & more practice time with the clutch, as others have said practice is king for this. The more you do it the easier it'll become, find a carpark/somewhere quiet & take you time getting the 'feel' of the clutch. It will also give you the chance to practice slow speed stuff, manouvres etc. Best of luck with the A2. ____________________ CBT: Pass 25/06/2011 Theory Test: Pass12/06/2012 Mod 1: Fail 08/07/2012

Ahh good times
Just ride it around streets your comfortable on, get used to slow riding with traffic too, was a bit of a trial by fire for me going straight into the daily commute
It's awkward and tricky at first, but once you've got used to it you'll be loving it in no time!
You'll soon be getting the pegs down
I very muhc doubt you need to adjust the clutch cable as others have suggested, just be gentle with it and get to know it, I stalled constantly on my first day or so, try not to over think it aswell!
YBR is very forgiving, just make your you ram the gears in from 1 to 2 as it loves jumping into neutral ____________________ Fzr-600 1999 |

How do you guys remember what gear you are in? |
When I re-took my CBT yesterday, the instructor told me he wanted to see me block change (slow down to a stop in the gear you're in, then change them all down at once, rolling forward slightly on the clutch if it wont engage the gear properly)
Now I personally don't like to do this as I use the engine to slow me down, kind of like my 1st brake, but that said, for someone who had an automatic and is struggling to get used to gears, try that for a while, you'll then only have to worry about changing up gears to start with, once you have the hang of that, then work on slowing down through the gearbox.
As fir the remembering what gear I'm in, I don't, Ive got used to the feel of how the bike behaves in each gear, which is something that will come in time and miles, I still pull away in 2nd or 3rd occasionally when I forget what gear I'm in, but I wouldn't worry about it YET if I were you. get used to how a manual feels different from an auto first, the rest will fall into place as you gain more experience. ____________________ Women are the cause of ALL accident's, If it isn't because one has run you off the road, it's because you have spent too long checking her out and driven up the arse of the car in front!
That or she's parked on an island, on a bend, leaving a gap even an anorexic couldn't fit through sideways! |
