Very rare that I ever take my lid off when filling up... I purposely keep it on, just to test if the staff ask me to remove it, and I haven't been asked yet.
On the rare occasions that I take it off to fill up, the Bandit mirrors protrude fairly far out, and are more than capable of supporting the lid without risk of it falling off... ____________________ 1st bike (Sept'06 - May'10) : 1991 GPZ500S / Current bike (since Nov 2009) : 2003 Suzuki Bandit 600N

Ride up, dismount, enter filling station and place helmet on counter. Ask staff to confirm you are over 16, tell them to put your helmet somewhere safe and dry while you fill. Exit to bike, yellow tape off the aisle you are using.Fill bike, with small amounts and regular stops to let it settle.Close tank and use paper towels to wipe down tank abd clean bottom of shoes.Remove yellow tape. Enter station and pay, retrieve helmet.Exit to bike. Re enter station, buy some mints.Exit station and ride off. As you ride out, mate rides in and repeats process. Point made.
If attendant ever tells you a nozzle contains thermalite the emergency fuel stop is on the wall outside. ____________________ Fallen Angel "Nae sniffing my seat now!!!!! "

A specific rack would make it that bit easier for people to nick them if you leave it there while going in. |
As opposed to taking off mirrors, bars, tank, petrol pump?
IIRC the 'official'* line on helmets is you should not place on mirrors or seat as they can fall or be knocked off. Same with placing on the ground as can be contaminated or again get knocked. Same as shouldn't place gloves inside helmet or use it as a shopping basket.
In practice however even the police park their helmets on the blue beacons. Given how much crud and road dirt could be on them then I guess it's their choice. Plus they could be knocked off. In short a bit of double standards.
Also I believe helmet placed on floor behind broken bike can signify in need of assistance. Not sure how universal that is though.
Rather than a rack a simple hook could suffice. Cheap and cheerful. Although I'm sure health and safety guru may say that is a hazard and a danger. I know the ST1100 has curved hooks under the seat designed for helmet storage (when seat locked back on helmet is secured and without cutting straps cannot be removed).
Just a thought, when with pillion at petrol station has anyone been told the rider andpillion needs to remove helmets?

some petrol station staff are a bit power trippy. i used the same one everytime i had to fill up and the staff were always nice, didnt bother their arse about the helmet as i have a flip front and had it open whenever i was in.
one day i got this completely arrogant woman though, to the extent she cut off the fuel before i began, and never bothered to even look at me to ask me to remove my helmet. lead to a bit of a debate telling her to step off her high horse and that if she had bothered to ask, i would have removed it no problem.
drove off and i happened to find a cheaper petrol station though, whose staff are all lovely ____________________ Current: Kawasaki ZL600 Eliminator

Honestly, while I'm all for causing as much quid-pro-quo pointless inconvenience to kiosk mongs, I doubt we're going to win this one. Their gaff, their rules, and I can't see any angle of attack that might work. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Not a clear example as it only shows what their ploicy is on helmets and doesn't give any information about how they would treat someone else covering there face.
Its quite simple, to be discrimination one has to be treated differently to another without good reason.
Merely asking someone to remove their helmet doesn't constitute discrimination. |

If you want to talk "discrimination", you'll have to pick one of those criteria. "I'm Scotch and therefore fuck-ugly" might not wash. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
