Illegal tyre tread wear - ever been done for it?

The tyres on my Street Triple are getting pretty worn. It's not quite down to the wear indicators but it's only about 0.5mm off them. I'm totally skint at the moment and want to put off replacing them to the last possible moment.

I should point out that I don't ride the Triumph in the wet, I switch to my ER-6n instead as its tyres have always been way better in the wet anyway.

I've done a bit of googling to try to find out what the penalty is for getting caught on tyres that are have less than 1.6mm tread depth left and found that it's 3 points per tyre.

First of all, is this correct? And if correct, what are my chances of receiving 6 points?

Is it not 1,6 for cars and 1mm for bikes. ( that theory test training is sticking in there! )

1 mm limit on bikes, but yes 3 points per tyre if they decide to do you for it.


Also consider that some tyres are hard to measure properly because the centre is plain rubber, when pirelli angels wear out for instance the tyre looks fine then after a week you have cords showing.

Metzeler Z6 are supposed to be even worse.

I was stopped a few months ago when they had a road block type thing going, stopping bikes only on a sunny day.

Hilariously, they wouldn't dare do it on a weekday at 9am for cars.

Chain, exhaust legality, tread, license etc was checked.

But then I'm down south, do you have police up there?

why not just ride the ER-6 until you can afford some new tyres for the Tripple and not risk it at all ?

Never been stopped to date, really need to get my front changed though. I've not measured it but I think it's probably on the verge of legality.

Personally I've gone for the bottom option, I keep an eye on the tread and when they get near I start shopping around for replacements

I know a guy who lost his licence for 12 points on his car... 4 illegal tyres which were literally JUST illegal, they were only an advisory in the MOT two weeks previous, but the copper was a dick and instead of doing him for one or two tyres and a warning, gave him the full 4

I figured this was probbably a little past its best...

And my 3 points & £60 fine was literally round the corner from my house driving home on the spare tyre in a fecking nova of all things. Spare had clearly been fcked by duff tracking, but held air. 2am, figured i'd get away with it...no sir.

I've had a CU30 - it was after a car accident.
The police tyre expert's report made it clear it was not the cause of the accident.

The police did not include a schematic in the evidence which I believe would have shown that it was likely the tyre was damaged in the accident.
I only saw the schematic after with insurance stuff relating to the accident.

3 points and a £400 fine.
The damage was to the sidewall not tread.

Got pulled over by a cyclist plod in London who argued the toss with me about whether I was insured or not (I was) and how commuting is always seperate from Social, Domestic & Pleasure policies (it's not).

After a heated exchange he wandered over to my front tyre which was just below the limit and decided to lecture me on how my suspension was knackered and tyre needed replacing. He eventually decided to let me on my way.

I wouldn't be worried about getting done, I'd be worried about the crappy handling of my otherwise awesome bike.

Just get some new tyres. Its not worth riding on them if they are fcuked.

its almost like buying a Ferrari and fitting Wanli tyres to it...

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

You have two bikes... Use the ER6n until you can afford new tyres. Points are bad,but crashing is worse.
