Insurance asking for repair estimate?!

Can someone in the know offer some assitance here, I have just reported the incident I had on my bike last night to my insurance, who said that the underwriters would most probably send someone around to estimate the damage..

however the underwriters have rang and said I need to find a garage of my choosing to get a repair estimate..

now im convinced this things gonna be a write off as the front end is missing, but does anyone know what percentage it takes to deem as a write off and how its decided??!

Is this standard procedure?

There isn't an exact amount of damage to be deemed a write off. Generally I believe its 40-60% of the value of the vehicle. Essentially if the repair is not cost effective.
Most insurance will send round their own in-house mechanics but I suppose that way is possible too obviously, just a bit more inconvenient for you.
Also, decline the first payment, ALWAYS.

damage as far as I can see..

*entire front wheel assembly broken away from the bike as both forks snapped sending fluid everywhere on the bike..

*massive gaping hole in front wheel, bent discs, etc etc

* dents in petrol tank on both sides..

* massive damage to handle bars and yoke to the point where the handlebars turn one way more than the other.

* the exhaust manifold has absorbed so much impact from the crash barrier its shifted the engine back prob 1/2 inch.. oil filter broke pissing out oil everywhere

* radiator is bent and mangled to the subframe pretty bad..

*unsure if the subframe itself is bent but the way the yoke and handlebars are wouldnt surprise me..

* gear change lever and peg snapped off on left side

*left side rear fairing cracked under pillion seat with scuffs


and thats from someone who doesnt have much mechanical knowledge, I cant see how it cant be a write off?!

Tell your insurance you can get the garage you've chosen to pick it up and assess it and the costs are theirs to pay for.

This includes, labour, picking up, dropping off, etc.

I said this to an insurance company and they knew they'd have to.

Looking at the damage prepare yourself for it to be written off.
Insurance look at the cost of new parts and will replace anything with damage. The forks alone could write it off.

Dear Insuramongs,

I called the local garages, described the damage and asked them if they'd like to invest their time in producing a detailed estimate for repairing a bike that's obviously going to be a write off. Two of them just laughed and hung up, the other one threatened to set the dog on me.

Does my policy cover dog bite injuries?

If your gear change level is broken, would be good to check if shaft in side is not broken.

Otherwise I would talk to insurance and tell them your problem with delivering bike to the garage for estimate and ask them who will pay for it.

They might have some kind of agreement with garages near you

Just a bit of feedback for you guys, after a second phone call today said underwriter apologised for other phone call and said if I thought that the bike was beyond reasonable repair, they would organise the salvagers to come in and collect and have there professional valuers place a value on the bike.

He went on to say that the settlement offer would not be an insult to my intelligence but a realistic representation of current market value, thats why they use a valuer apparently. Now it all sounds a bit too good to be true, i said myself I was skeptical but if they come up trumps I would share my love with friends and forum goers!! So we shall see if they deliver...

I have 6 print outs here Infront of me, all are 04 Z's and all have higher miles than mine, priced @ 2599-2999... We shall see!!
