Just thought I'd share todays antics with you lot, some may be interested.
My pal (And member of BCF), Gaz, owns an early Mk2F VW Polo 1.3 which he's been tidying up over the past 12 months or so.

Oil pressure has been low recently, and it's also been nearly 50% down on compression across all 4 pots too.

So he picked up some new parts, and we did a full top end replacement today, it now drives like a new car. Amazing what a new head can do!

First things first, I put the pop-up gazebo up. Wicked bit of kit!

https://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/319300_10151027381535606_119515044_n.jpg

Sorted out the new bits;

https://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/s720x720/255206_10151948832970604_169219859_n.jpg

Got the bad boy in!

https://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/s720x720/558403_10151951666890604_692982334_n.jpg

Head off;

https://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/s720x720/532422_10151951876115604_1755642009_n.jpg

Had to jack it up to get a bucket under to do an oil change. Laughing

https://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/283666_10151027382395606_2089869648_n.jpg

Scraped all the old gasket off, gave it a clean with a bit of emery cloth and WD40;

https://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/405981_10151027383270606_2070725041_n.jpg

Swapped all the bits over, including the high-lift cam;

https://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/s720x720/534821_10151952060225604_893987525_n.jpg

Got the new head fitted. New head has been ported/polished, brand new valves, valve guides, stem seals, double valve springs, and also skimmed.

https://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/s720x720/524261_10151027979680606_991513734_n.jpg

Started literally one click of the key, and ran like a beaut!

https://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/s720x720/556041_10151027977785606_98540905_n.jpg

After a short drive, temp gauge rocketed, and the thing cut out.
Very strange.
After closer examination, it is not over-heating at all, it's something to do with the temp-switch on the inlet, and some of the vacuum pipes, as the temp gauge is responding to the throttle position/inlet vacuum. Laughing

Other than that, it's spot on. Very nippy now indeed.

Next thing to do is strap a charger to the side of it.

I had one of those as my first car. Not the racy GT Coupe though, just an old-lady-spec 1.3 CL breadvan. Brakes were not its strong point...

Nice car repair project!
Those version of Polo GT were always quite nice little warm hatch's back in the day. I'm going to be honest, but i was always a Metro man in my early car days. I had an MG1300, and then a Gta 16v, but i always wanted an caged, lowered MG turbo with a strengthened straight cut gearbox, and a shit load of boost! Laughing

The later Metro Gti's using the K-series were also nice car's, but it wasn't for years later that the MG 160bhp 1.8VVC conversions seemed to become a great idea. By then i had moved on from Metro's and wanted bigger cars. Shame as i think a few people had alot of fun with Escort cosworth spanking in Metro's lol!

My Pal Jim was on the 'Tro scene for ages, had a couple of VVCs. Awesome cars!
My Clio could push them along quite easily though. Cool
Sold it now though, Gutted! Sad

Got another motor though. Mk1 Kangoo 1.9 Derv! Time to mod!

Yeah they're well handy! This one is a telescopic thing. They're well expensive online.
Aldi were selling them for £60. Should of bought 2 really!

I'll do the front for you.
Not going anywhere near the back. Laughing
Them things are seized solid from the day they leave Citroen.
I've done a couple, but it's not a nice job!

If it was a Renault, I'd lower the torsion bar with my eyes closed. But Citroen/Peugeot group. GO FVCK! Cool

Haha! I've heard bad things about the rear.

Some bloke is advertising rear torsions adjusting and free front springs fitted for £80. Rather him than me tbh!

My mates are seized as Thumbs Down

Cheers

That's interesting!

I wonder if that's just a base rate. And when he comes across it seized solid, he calls up with a revised price?
Seems extremely cheap for such a big job. If it's a straight £80, then I'd snatch his arm off. You'd pay a local garage a good £40 to fit front lowering springs anyway.

Last Pug/Cit beam I lowered was on a Peugeot Partner van, 55 plate.
And even that was as solid as they come! Laughing

I'll look into a Gazebo as well now, as this thread has inspired me into believing that working on car's outside is a possibility in the u.k

Nice beetle project you did there mate! A girl in my 6th form class, had one in that green as her first car, i think her dad fixed it up for her and she kept it for years, so i guess she quite liked it!

Binge, yeah me too like all the other excited BCF'ers would love to see your new Can/Van build project, but please don't do it until the awesome little Chaly/Toilet bike is finished! A Kangoo will be cool, but it's just not quite as epic as your current build. Laughing
