Looking at taking the 916 over to france and germany in the next few weeks for a few days, Noticed there is mention with cars and bikes to get a beam converter to dip the beam the other way....

Im puzzled how to go about doing this as on the duke the main light is already on the left, which stays on all the time.... Some people say its alright as is... other say they need pointing to the right.

How ?

Also...spare bulbs,floro jacket,breathalysers,first aid kit... anything else ?

Thumbs Up Very Happy

Documents, all of them.

Don't worry about the headlight. I've never adjusted mine

Just came back form a week in Normandy, never did anything
about my headlight (must be always kept on in France I believe). Also, wore a flouro vest first day then just kept it in my tank bag, never saw another biker wearing one, met some dutch bikers who also said they wore them first day and then didn't bother. The French bike police don't even wear them (or any flouro, two I saw had short sleeve shirts on).

Breathalyser kit is only a caution not a fine until November.

All documents, hi vis (just need to have one, dont need to wear it). I didnt bother with breathalyser or GB sticker or light adjustment. Got stopped by cops twice, but neither seemed to notice or care about those things.

You don't currently need to carry or wear a hi-vis on a bike but in France the law has been made and is waiting to come into effect

They are not enforcing that one until November, then the fine is a whopping 11 euros!

I think a lot of bike headlamps just go 'down' on dip rather than to the left so it doesn't matter.
Interesting to hear the fluorescent rule is being widely disregarded.

Though not a fan I could see the value of carrying one if broke down at night especially.

UK headlights will kick up left. Here's a guide to motorcycle headlight alignment

Really you should use some tape or similar to cover off the part of the beam that kicks up left as this will dazzle oncoming vehicles.

Most people don't bother though as they generally only rider during the day while touring.

The French breathalyser law came into force in July. Ideally you'll want to carry two of them.

As for a GB sticker. I've never used one.

When does the law about not having speed camera sites on your sat-nav come into force. IIRC there was a whopping fine on that but then I've also read that the police can't actually check your gps device so I'm confused Confused

Apology for thread misdirection but it is find of in the riding in Europe vein.

You have to have a meal at the Pistenklause restaurant in Nürburg. Lump of raw steak, hot stone, cook it yourself at the table, disappear in a haze of fat smoke, don't wear those clothes again until well laundered. All surrounded by motorsport memorabilia on the walls.

You have to have your headlight on at all times in Germany; my dipped beam bulb went whilst I was there so I had to ride with the main beam on (daytime) until I could find a garage selling a bulb... maybe take a spare.

All documents (including passport, EHIC, V5, travel insurance, recovery etc) PLUS photocopies kept in separate luggage.

Ziplock bags to keep documents and other stuff (eg phone) dry.

And remember, the exit slip roads from German autobahns are often very tight corners, so take it easy!

There is little point in not having your headlight on at all times anyway, most bikes don't even give us the option.

Most European countries do require all vehicles to have headlights on. Something to do with safety. lol. Though I think in the Scandinavian countries there are reports to back up the claims.

I've got 50mm termi's on the duke, google says the police out there dont like loud cans... anyone had any problems like this or heard of anything ?

Might just sling the original cans back on to be safe..

Swiss, Germans and others don't like loud cans.

I've been many times with straight through scorpion cans and even a straight through stubby. You won't have any issues.

If concerned then take your baffles with you.
