Hi BCF

Having been riding my YBR for a good couple months now. I thought my first set of gear would hold up. But I've been let down by my Disc Lock Evil or Very Mad

https://www.bikesax.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/xe15bk_350.jpg

Lasted me the whole 1 months before it developed a fault, It would not alarm anymore. It then spent two weeks being repaired by Ghostbikes, only to endure 2 days of use before dying when It was returned this week.
So I've asked for a full refund & and I'm looking for a replacement.
Which brings the question, Alarm or no Alarm?
The disc lock was my only real security besides the steering lock & it was perfect to fit in my pocket for when I went out.

So should I buy:

# Another disc lock alarm
# A standard disc lock
# Spread my security more (e.g: chains)

The disc lock was ideal because I could just pop it in my pocket and go, parking where I pleased.
Having no under seat storage ect I don't really have space to carry a chain, its more about being practical while still being fit for purpose.

Any help or suggestions mucho appreciated Thumbs Up

I would suggest a quality chain and padlock.

You can buy standalone alarmed padlocks that you can use on the chain AS well as the proper lock and chain.

Stick a cheap alarm on it..

Cyclone V2 gets good reviews and is only 30 quid..
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CYCLONE-V2-MOTORBIKE-MOTORCYCLE-ALARM-IMMOBILISER-/200379831192

Then any bog standard disc lock or chain..

The disc lock or chain will act as a visual deterrent for most of the chancers,
and something that makes a big noise will make the rest scarper..

And those that really want your bike.. well they will come with a
van, so nothing will put them off..

Depending on what bike I am on I use a motrax vishas disc lock and a 13mm Pragmasis chain. On the bigger bike a 16mm Almax or Pragmasis chain with a Squire SS65CS or Abloy 362 padlock and a motrax vishas disc lock. I had a cheap alarm that went haywire so I have little faith in them. Crying or Very sad

Xena disk lock, you say?

https://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b82/mondeokid/Xena.jpg

Padlock, some random yellow disk lock, some random chain and lock, whatever I remember to bring. I really just make sure to park next to a nicer bike (they're all nicer bikes) and hope for the best.

I have a little Oxford Junior disc lock, have gone to ride off so many times with it on, paint is chipped off all over it, but it seems unbreakable! It's just another layer on top of my CCTV, garage alarm, chain/padlock, Cyclone bike alarm and big scary dog.

I've got one of those yellow Xena locks, never had any issues with it!

even if it is made of cheese, hopefully the alarm will still go off if someone cracks it!

+1 for the cyclone alarm.

actually have the C-11 alarm on my bike and its good.

125db siren
remote start/cut off
kill engine up to 100m away
led warning light

£23 including shipping. it just plugged into my bike and literally plug and play.

then wack any old disk lock on, lets face it, they're not that fantastic and relying on that alone....well. also any decent chain.

you can have all the devices on it you want, if someones determined or good enough, they'll steal it.

the best you can do is stop the would-be and opportunistic barstards.

also with a fitted alarm, stick the fob on the key with a STRONG key ring and you dont have to worry if you forget your disk lock.

the only down sides to the C-11

3 "chirps" when you remove the key as a reminder (bloody annoying at 3/4am)
2 "chirps" when you disarm
1 "chirp" on arming.

flashing the lights would be enough but its not an option as best i can tell.

meh, for £23 alarm you cant go wrong with it really.

Almost all disclocks are shit, it's difficult to find one that isn't:

When it's at home, it's got a chain and padlock through the rear wheel and over the seat, a disk lock on front (oxford screamer but the alarm bit is buggered, and used to go off whenever it rained anyway), and a C11 cyclone alarm for good measure. Bedroom is directly above where the bike is parked, with window open most nights.

When I'm out, it's usually alarm+steering lock+disc lock, unless I know I'm going to be leaving it ages, in which case I'll bring the full ensemble along.

Also if there are any other bikes around where I'm parking, I make sure to park close by to the nicest looking one with low security Wink.

My Oxford Screamer is still going strong on the first set of batteries but then again, it doesn't get wet at all.

Wont stop man in van thieves, but the cheapest I ever had cost me peanuts.

Was having trouble with my sidestand cut out switch so decided to disconnect it, was just about to splice the wires together when I had a lightbulb moment Idea .

Got one of those cheap chrome flickswitch,s connected it up and hid it somewhere but where I could reach it easy.

Would have loved to to the thief's face after he hotwired the bike only to see it die every time he tried to pull away. Laughing

<stuff about switches>

Wouldn't you have to put back in a side stand switch every time it needed to be MOT'd?

Wasn't sure if it was a test item or not - hence the question mark Wink. I'm guessing not from your reply though.

Where's my "don't bother" option?

I tend to just park it somewhere decent and highly visible. The bike does have a datatool alarm of some variety.

As far as I see it there are 3 main types of thieves: steal to order, man/van opportunist and chavy scrotes. The chavs are thwarted by parking in a decent area, the steal to order bunch don't want a 15yo bike and the man/van can't really be stopped but again 15yo and heavy parked next to anything seems to make it ok.

I just bought a mahoosive chain for mine, yes there is no under seat storage but I usually have a backpack on anyway so pop it in there. Yes it's heavy but I don't use it that often cos usually in a secure carpark at work.

In fact, quite often I've gone into town (Liverpool) and just left it next to a nicer more desirable bike Laughing

Instead of a disc lock, put a padlock through the rear sprocket at the 7 o' clock position.

Much harder to get off and if you leave it on by accident then try to ride off, the bike just squats down and won't move as if you were holding the back brake on. No dropping the bike, no smashed brake callipers.
