I know there are a few similar threads but after some advice and suggestions!

Got my MOD 2 on Monday and should I pass I'm looking to buy a big bike straight away (no restrictions)

I was initially looking at a CBF 500 but after trying one in the riding school and having an absolute pig of a lesson where I could not do anything right (MOD 1 practice) its steering me towards something else.
I'm favouring the ER6F at the moment (poss as ive done most of my course on an Er5)
I've also been looking at a XJ6 Diversion.

Probably looking to spend about £3,500 at the most.

Any advice or suggestions woul be great,

Thanks

Gaffa,
You've got quite a few choices at that price range.
Honda - CBR f
Kawa - Er-6f/n
Suzuki - SV650
And plenty more

All of these are quite typical 'first big bikes'. They'll go some but have quite nice weight, handling and fuel consumption. The cbr is probably the fastest (if that's what you're looking for) and all are plentiful in the 2nd hand market.

For £3500 you'll be able to get a nearly new er-6 or sv650

Were you looking to include insurance and gear in your budget?

I can tell you about ER5 and 6 as I've had personal experience of them. Did my MOD1 training and test on ER5 - thought it was a great bike did everything I wanted it to but I digress really. I then went onto the bigger ER6 for my MOD2 training and test - the ER6 is an awesome bike in comparison. Plenty of power when you want it, super comfortable and just a generally very easy bike to ride.

But I think with 3 n half grand you could get pretty much whatever you wanted Razz

I know I didn't write too much but to summarise it : I liked the ER6!

Thanks for the replies,

James, I've already got all my gear, decent stuff as well so it won’t need replacing etc, the insurance is also covered.

Cheers Snoo,
Glad you’re happy with the ER6, that’s what I’m more inclined to go for.

I know there is a lot of choice with that budget, I’m more than willing to spend less of course!
I'm planning on keeping the bike for a good few years so not worried about initial expenditure.

Cheers

Get an SV, they are great beginner bikes.

Or (although there is 110% an ulterior motive) a Thundercat isn't baaaad... Razz

'Show me how to check the horn' (Seriously!)

'Tell me how you'd check the drive chain'
~ Me: Check for rust, kinks, damaged links, check it's oiled, check sprocket teeth & check the tension........

He followed this up with 'Tell what the tension should be on a chain'
~ Me: I'd check the owners manual for the correct tension.

'If you were taking a passenger, tell me what adjustments you might need to make to the bike'
~Me: Adjust rear suspension pre-load, mirrors, headlight angle.

& he then followed up with 'Tell me how carrying a passenger would affect your motobike'
~ Me: Slower acceleration, longer braking distances, top heavy due to extra person.

He seemed happy with everything I'd said so we started riding after this. Thumbs Up

Sounds good, leaves you with £2.5k over which is a nice fund for the next bike. Wink Seriously though, I absolutely love my Thundercat. At least take a look at one, it's alot nicer than the ER6 IMO
