Whoa, whoa there.
Notifying the DVLA of the change of keeper - keeper, not owner - is the responsibility of the current keeper. And like fuck would I trust a new keeper/owner to do it, the V5C is a liability, not an asset.
Just get your details on the V5C. I'll be astonished if whatever novelty-purposes policy MCN offer will care, and again: the keeper is not necessarily the owner. It says this in SECOND COMING FONT right at the top of the V5C.
In terms of SORNing, simplest thing is to just do it. You can do it online with the V5C reference number (take a note if it's not on the new keeper slip). What's it going to cost you, a couple of £££ for a partial month when you get a refund on the VED?
If you want to cheap out on that, you have a de facto grace period before they start demanding a bribe, several months in my experience, although some folk reckon less. Even then, all they're doing is demanding money. As sickpup discovered, you can laugh it off, offer to see them in court, and then just cite the Interpretations Act.
To "un-SORN", you just buy VED. That's it, job done. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Buy the one day type insurance (google it) for your friend to ride bike home.
It does not matter he does not own the bike, that's what the one day insurance is intended for.
I had to get one to take my lad's bike to the MOT for him. I can't remember who I used but google tells me there are some here. I might have used flexirider | flexirider wrote: | ...Many bikers will need additional temporary insurance at some stage, either to use a motorbike that doesn’t belong to them, to ride a new purchase home or to insure another person to ride their own motorbike. ... |
Fill in V5 parts in your name and send off your bit and hope seller does the same.
Then problem sorted.
As for bike and tax I now believe if bike taxed and you sorn it you can send tax disc back for a partial refund of the remaining tax period. You then just pay for a new tax disc when you want to take it off sorn.

Map, the 1 day insurance thing stopped as of 31st April (ifirc). The underwriters won't do it anymore.
E-bike do a PAYG monthly scheme. You can get insured for 1 month, use it for 1 day and then cancel it. They will charge you for the 1 day and a cancellation fee (which will probably be about the same price as the 1 month cost). ____________________ Current Bikes: ZX7r 97 (Black Beauty), VFR400 NC24 (The banana)

Oh twonk, you're quite right.
To be honest, I just wouldn't bother, or fret. It took me something like 3 months to get anything from the DVLA, and that was just some "You need to insure or SORN" letters. It was another couple of months before the bribe demands turned up, then doubled, and when I finally bothered to SORN, that was the last I heard about it. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
