Right, I've seen a bike on ebay going pretty cheap with the reason according to the owner being down to the fact that it's on BF plates, they say that

"[the] BIKE WILL NEED RE REGISTERING AT DVLA AS IT IS STILL ON BRITISH FORCES PLATES HENCE I ONLY WANT CHEAP MONEY FOR IT TO SAVE MYSELF THE HASSLE OF RE REGISTERING IT, THIS INVOLVED GETTING YEAR OF MANUFACTURE CERTIFICATE THEN GOING TO DVLA TO RE REGISTER IT.
I HAVE HAD IT A YEAR AND IT HAS JUST BEEN SAT IN MY UNIT SO HERE IS A CHEAP BIKE UP FOR GRABS
IT HAS BLACK WHEELS ON THE BIKE BUT I ALSO HAVE SET OF MINT WHITE WHEELS AND TYRES AND SPARE TANK"

Does this sound suspicious to anyone or is this something that's common?

Well the plate is not insured nor is it recognised at DVLA.

2001 GSXR600? VX51 FGA?

I wouldn't buy anything from someone who is incapable of turning off their caps lock. Or indeed making any attempt whatsoever to describe the condition of the bike.

You also have to wonder why he's only used four of the twelve pictures he gets included with the insertion fee for a vehicle auction.

He also used the word "MINT" in his auction.

Walk away. Plenty more fish in the sea.

I think you might find only vehicles owned by the mod have mod plates.

I am at a loss as to why they would want an old bike.

I would say this is bollocks and walk away from it.

Or ring the old bill ask to speak to a traffic officer and ask him how it all works. They are shit hot on any vehicle law.

Not a bad idea at all, I'll do this and see what they have to say..
Though, after thinking about it rationally I think it's safe to assume that the person is full of shit.

Could be an export plate and it's never been exported.

Squaddies can buy vehicles for export and they get issued with standard UK plates (usually with a red band around the edge) but they have to leave the country within 6 months and they often don't appear on the DVLA database.

This one may have got through the net, which could mean the person who re-registers it will have to pay the VAT on it's original purchase price.

If the seller is not willing to reregister it I would be suspicious.

You need the MOD release documents.

You will then need to insure it (it can be insured on a short policy against the VIN) and take it for an MOT.

You then need to take the MOT, Certificate of insurance and the MOD release certificate to your local DVLA office and they will be able to register it and provide a normal Licence number and V5 to register it for civilian road use.

Sounds like he's bought it at a MOD surplus auction and never got around to registering it, so it's not actually registered in any way at all. Probably not suspicious, just a bit of a thicko of a seller. I believe MOD recycle their vehicle registration plates once they sell a vehicle.

What are you talking about? It's got black wheels, what more do you need to know?

Have you tried checking the bike history? May be worth a try.

Ignore every other post except Paddy's.

The bike is on a BFG plate - i.e. has been bought tax-free and exported to (probably) Germany. It will need to to be imported through HMRC and registered with DVLA. You will need every piece of paperwork the bloke has, plus a great deal of patience to jump through the hurdles those agencies will place in your way.

If the price reflects the amount of faffing around you'll be doing (and remember, he got it tax-free), get it.

Yeah, but you were waffling on about having to pay the VAT, which, IIRC, doesn't apply if the bike has been outside the UK for more than 12 months.

+1 for effort -2 for accuracy. Therefore, ignore. Thumbs Up

Bazza is correct, you will have to pay the duty on it to get it registered in the UK.
The seller can probably do it easier than you can, the MOD, has it's own customs dept., who will have all the correct forms to fill in.
Just depends how much duty is payable.

And as I said, it's possible it's never been out, hence there could be duty to pay, but you won't find out until you try and register it.

if no VAT has been paid on it, surely registering it here will require that VAT is paid on it ?

One last time for the comprehension-impaired: If the bike was BFG registered for more than 12 months, there is no VAT liability.

And then there's this, for the benefit of the wilfully illiterate

Quote

The VAT Act 1994

Section 30(8) permits the zero-rating of goods removed from the UK and supplied to a customer for export. It also provides the authority for further regulations and conditions...............

..........and the presence of the goods in the United Kingdom after that date or the non-observance of the condition has not been authorised for the purposes of this subsection by the Commissioners, the goods shall be liable to forfeiture under the Management Act and the VAT that would have been chargeable on the supply but for the zero-rating shall become payable forthwith by the person to whom the goods were supplied or by any person in whose possession the goods are found in the United Kingdom; but the Commissioners may, if they think fit, waive payment of the whole or part of that VAT.

So, as I've said, if that vehicle has never left the UK and/or doesn't have any paperwork to back up it's export, whoever finds themselves in possession of it, can be liable for it's original VAT content.

You can't get BFG registration without exporting the vehicle. It must be exported and registered within 30 days of purchase and remain overseas for a minimum of 12 months from the date of first registration to become exempt from VAT liability.

You'll note I suggested the OP research the steps he needs to take and the requirement for every scrap of paperwork the seller has in order to make the decision.

If you want to keep being a dick, feel free to post any number of increasingly stupid and pointless "what-if" scenarios. Remember - there are Internet Points at stake here.

I still stand by my previous comment.

The seller is clearly of limited intelligence so getting a) The truth. and b) The appropriate paperwork. out of him will be an uphill battle
