Sold the GS500 and after a few days of looking around and putting in some miles, picked up this yesterday (apologies for poor quality) ;

https://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l586/richtea70/cbad520b.jpg

2007, 2200 miles, £2500.00. Really pleased with it, but weather has been peeing down since, and with work, haven't had a chance to go for a proper spin.

Anyway, the guy who had it has done 900 miles in the last 3 years! Whilst it has had regular oil changes, its only had its 600 mile dealer service from new.

Is it worth getting a service on it now or is it just the normal stuff you can do at home (oil/air filters, check everythings tightened/lubricated etc)?

Also are there any known problems I can check for/prevent with this bike aside from the generic stuff?

I took a while finding the right bike as most seem to be modded with exhausts/air boxes or Monster Energy stickers, so this is a standard bike wihich is just what I wanted as I'm on the 33hp restriction.

Any comments welcome,
Thanks,
Rich

You can DIY, oil change, check chain tension.

Pretty slow and sluggish as standard

An exhaust system and airbox mod is ideal... you'll notice the vroom vroom a lot.

I'd have one of them... In fact I want one right now.. but they are pretty slow.

Amazing price too, that would be up for £3.5k here

Thumbs Down

Let us know how it goes, I'll hopefully be getting one of these on 33bhp too Razz

Thumbs Up

Just noticed you're from Reading, how did you get it so cheap! Haha, sell it to me when you're done? Cool

I spent two days going through every ad I could find for a DRZ, and emailing/phoning with offers. This guy sounded genuine and had had the bike up for sale for two months but had forgot to renew the advert so had had no calls. Originaly wanted £2800 but I haggled hard! Wink

Nice bike.

Thieves love them, you might want to consider a thicker chain and a cover Wink .

Not particularly problems, but make sure you keep on top of the battery, probably worth buying an optimiser.
Valve clearances should be checked at the correct service intervals.
If it hasn't already been done it's worth looking in to swapping the Cam Chain Tensior, (ACCT), from the automatic one to a Manual one, (MCCT).

There is loads of info at Thumpertalk:-

Nice Bike by the way. Thumbs Up

Nice machine. I've always had a soft spot for these. I don't know why, there's just something about them. Maybe it stems from when I was younger, around 18, and some guy let me have a go on his as he saw me on the Suzuki TS50.

Looks nice in that colour too Thumbs Up

Good choice, if you're restricted to 33bhp and want to be within the law for the most part, then just get a nice end can and leave it at that. I would highly suggest a braided brake line for the front, it transforms the bike.

I paid £2K for my old one 2 years ago, 2006 model with Arrow end can. Had to travel to Scotland for it mind, 300 mile round trip, wasn't too bad but I didn't ride it back. They aren't great on the motorway, they rev far too high and you'll find yourself going for the imaginary 6th gear a lot but it's made for the twisties and around town anyway.

Look in to doing the 9x9 airbox and jetting mod. It makes a hell of alot of difference to the throttle response and smoothness. Also consider changing those tyres as they look like they might be the original Dunlops, which werent particularly good when they were fresh and new, let alone having sat for 5 years.

Thanks for all the comments/tips.

I normally keep the bike in the garage, and luckily I live in quite a nice area. Failing that the garage is alarmed and Ive got dogs so hopefully that's enough. But obviously when taking it out and about I'll think about upgrading the security.

Re. The airbox mods, I think I'll leave them for now as I understand that they will take me over the 33bhp limit?

However I would like a louder exhaust if that doesnt affect the power output at all. Also would I be correct in assuming that if I stick on a different can it would have to be re-jetted? Don't think I'd be up to doing that yet!

Ill try and get some better pictures up when the sun comes out!

Thanks again.

I had a full FMF powerbomb system on mine, with a semi automatic clutch, non std forks, carb from something else and a very precisely cut set of holes in the airbox cover.

Was okay fun. Set of acerbis plastics (no mudguard or tank) was 70 quid, so I bought and stickered up for the inevetable drops when pushing too hard.

I found d209s really good on my SM wheels.

Keep on top of the oil level if you wheelie a lot.

Sorry, I feel really dumb here Embarassed but what is the cam chain tensioner and what's the issue with the automatic one?

The camchain tensioner is a spring-loaded ratchet that pushes on the camchain guide to keep the chain automatically tensioned as it wears).
A manual tensioner is a device that you have to adjust manually (a bit like having to adjust your drive chain) but have a care because many people set them too tight and cause premature wear to the camchain guides.

The automatic cam chain tensioner on the DRZwas prone to failure, the easiest/cheapest fix is to replace it with a manual cam chain tensioner. It's an easy job to do, takes about half an hour.

If you go over to Thumpertalk here:-

this will tell you everything you need to know.

Manual Tensioners arte shit, I used one off a CRF450 and it was perfect. Make sure you change the oil regually and keep an i on the level, I managed to sieze my bottom end and running mine out of oil! Not a bad price you paid either, These always seem to go so cheap in devon picked up my 08 reg one for 2200 with 3k miles on it. Have fun anyway as they are a great bike!

Yeah, I want a DT 125. To rip around and go down byways.

Seen someone with one, he wouldn't even go inside the shop with it, as we were outside Tesco's and he went to the cash machine, and he was keeping a very close eye on it.

I knew why though, they are a thieves jackpot. Thumbs Down Sad

I must admit to having a whole lot of fun on my XR400SM.Except that it now needs the 416cc piston kit fitted to increase the power. It recently got shown up by a XR250SM Embarassed

A friend bought himself a DRZ400S and wanted to use it for work.He modified it with Ohlins forks and a shock,Akra system,Talon wheels,big Braking discs,Yoshimura big piston,stage 2 cams,39mm FCR carb,gas flowed/ported head etc.
The Suzuki brought out the 400SM and he could not sell his bike for what he had spent on it.looked nice though.I think that his wife got it as part of the divorce Embarassed
