1. Reliable
2. Corrosion resistent
3. ABS
4. Good MPG
5. Parallel twin?
6 (depending on roads) half fairing

This would imply the F650GS is the ultimate commuting bike, perhaps only marred but BMW's unrelieable electronics?

This is a purely subjective/opinionated and therefore pointless discussion. My ZX6 is the best, because it means I enjoy my commute to work. So there.

ER6n is far too expensive to be the ideal commuter bike imo. To my mind it needs to be older, cheaper and more disposable if you are going to be dissolving in the salt every winter.

I actually get on rather well with my CBR6f for the commute, can't think of any real reason why I need a low powered parallel twin. It does 47mpg, good wind protection, old enough and popular enough that used parts are easy to find, reliable, well made and plenty fast enough if I decide to take the scenic way in out of hours.

Ultimate commuter is entirely a personal choice, I'd happily ride any old hack with two wheels to work but I don't particularly want to own more than one bike. Something that will do a bit of everything is my ultimate commuter.

They are not that expensive ~ £5.5K and they will last at least 5 years.
There is the 0% apr scheme and the first 2 years warranty. Which can be upgraded for about £250 for another 2 years.

Mine was about £4k 4 years back and it's still in good nick. I hose it down and spray the Scotolier fs365 on it.

After 5 years I reckon it will be worth about £1800.

So £5.5-1800 = £3700 / 5 = £740 per year. (Nowt much)

For me at least, my Fazer makes an ideal commuter bike. It also doubles up as my all rounder bike for touring with the other half and winter riding Thumbs Up

The R6 comes out to play on sunny days and track days Cool

You and I clearly have a different opinion of what constitutes expensive Wink .

I'm not knocking your choices, but to me, £740 a year on a commuter (just for the bike) is a hell of a lot. If my £2k CBR had lasted just 3 years before spontaneously fissioning itself into nothingness I'd still be better off Laughing .

That seems to be your ideal commuter.
Those aren't the criteria I choose.
How long have you been commuting on how many different bikes?
It took me a while to realise what my priorities were.

Personally I wouldn't go for something with wide bars like the F650GS because of it's limitations in tight traffic for a town commute which has such.

So, not quite Garth - If we're talking 'ideal', I'm going for the S1000RR Smile.

If I was going for 'cheap', I'd go electric one way or another.

I'd probably have to say this:

https://motorbike-search-engine.co.uk/classic-bikes-2/1991-CB250.jpg

Honda CB 250.

Why?

80Mph so it will do motorway speeds comfortably.
Group 6 insurance so its cheap.
Cheap parts.
75MPG so its not heavy on fuel too.

For a cheap commute to and from work its pretty much perfect.

Sorry, this was best, not worst commuter Wink.

Sure it'll get you there pretty cheaply. But not enjoyably, quickly or safely.

I guess it depends on lots of things.
If you only commute a short way through a city then a C90 may be just fine.

If you are commuting 100 miles a day on the motorway then something like a Vstrom may be better.

Everyone is different, and everyone looks for different attributes in a bike that suits them.

For me on my old 10 mile commute my F650 was fine. It was preferable in the winter to my Speed 4, as its got better weather protection and doesn't square off expensive tyres. Not to mention i hardly ever have to fill the tank.
Not quite sure what you have against BMW's, have you even ridden any?

Ah, he also did suggest that one was his ultimate commuting bike - though, yes, does seems to have picked up a very poorly research titbit of information and taken it as broad fact, as so many people seem to be getting annoyed at him doing.

Let's not turn this into another Lupine Troll thread

It's too easy Thumbs Up

The answer to this question surely depends on distance. I commute 5 miles, a 125 is plenty to get me where i'm going Thumbs Up

Mine was 6.2 and a GSXR1000 was the best fit for my requirements.

Have you tried commuting on a range of other bikes?

I would have to say my Hornet is the best commuter bike but that's just my opinion.
