Hey everyone, only had the bike a couple of days and it's already let me down... The engine has started to idle roughly and when revs are applied it dies. It then struggles to start, if at all. I noticed as i was going down the gears, pulling the clutch in, the revs would drop and cut out. I'd only been on the bike 5 minutes and noticed the pipes to the radiator were extremely hot but the engine was cold to the touch. Anyone have any ideas that i could try before i get financially raped at a garage? Its a 1997 ZX6R F3. Cheers

Starved of fuel ??

Either a kink or a blockage in a fuel line ??

No blockages or kinks mate. I did notice that as the revs dropped, so did the lights on the dash. Could it be a battery issue?

Before worrying about fueling, I would investigate radiator problem. It may be nothing though, best to check though. Sounds like the thermostat or water pump could be faulty. Did you touch both the top and bottom of the radiator a significant difference in temp indicates a problem.

Bottom hose was significantly hotter than the top hose. We stripped a pipe which had a small, plastic water filter inside which was blocked so gave that a clean out. Can't start it now to see if it rectified the overheating issues.

Have you got spark?

Do you have fuel in the float bowls?

I had a similar thing on my bike a few weeks ago... Turns out the battery positive was not not tightened properly. Poor contact gave intermittent power to the engine and caused it to cut out at low revs.

Might be worth giving you battery and charging system a once over

Getting it to start last night drained the battery so we took it out and stuck it on charge. Put it back in and it died after a few turns. Hooked up the jump leads and she started fine. But then cut out when it was idling and wouldnt start up. It was only idling at around 500-1000 rpms which i thought was a bit too low. Shouldnt they idle at around 1500rpm? Put the missus on hold for tonight so going to spend tonight working on the bike. Hopefully clean the carbs out.

Should be ~1400rpm when warm, ~1000rpm when cold.

Increase the idle speed and double check the battery voltage is above 12.5v when off and around 14v when running.

Did it start first time with the jump leads? Also did it cut out with the jump leads connected or after you took them off? If it died after you removed the jump leads your battery and most likely your charging system are FUBARed.
Helpful diagnostics flowchart here

If it died with the jump leads still attached it is most likely not electrical. Other people on here can give you a lot more help than I can if it's that.

Good luck

With the jump leads attached it started staright away and was ticking over nicely. We then disconnected the jump leads and let it ran for a bit for which the revs gradually died down and then cut out. Had to bump start it and it was still idling rough (when it did start Laughing )

Thanks for everyones advice so far Razz

OK then, I am fairly confident that your battery and charging system are to blame here. If it runs fine with a steady power supply (jump leads) and dies off when that is disconnected, the bike is not generating sufficient electricity.

Grab a multimeter and go through the flowchart I linked in my previous post. You should be able to nail it in a few minutes.

Problem solved! Just about to take the carbs off when we noticed that the choke cable was sticking by about a quarter of its play. Freed it off and now it goes like a stabbed rat. Would have been slowly flooding and explains the over fueling issue. Thanks to everyone for their help Thumbs Up
