did DVLA have a brain wave for once

Possible repost but SORN is pretty high on the search hits

Published 09 December 2013

The government has made some changes to the regulations for Continuous Insurance of vehicles in the UK.

From 16-12-2013 it will no longer be necessary to renew a SORN every year as long as you remain the owner of the car. But if you sell a car on a SORN, the new owner will need to register it to himself and declare his own SORN. The SORN does not pass from one keeper to another.

The change, announced today by Roads Minister Robert Goodwill, is part of a package of measures to get rid of unnecessary red tape.

Last year, around 4 million SORNs were made, with over 1 million of those repeat renewals.

Additionally, registered keepers will no longer need to have their insurance certificates checked when re-taxing a vehicle.

Note on this.
What it seems it means is that you do not need to take Ins cert when taxing at post office.
As they will have access to MID to check you are insured.

Thumbs Up to the SORN change, although I already had a bike on SORN for over a year without receiving a reminder or any blackmail letters, so it's entirely possible that the DVLA have jumped the gun.

On insurance certificates to pay for VED, a qualified Thumbs Up. As I heard it[*] the post office / DVLA office won't even check the MID, they'll just take your money and record it on The Computer.

This is in tandem with doing away with the physical vehicle license, which makes sense. The point of checking insurance was to try and prevent people getting a vehicle license (tax disc) which provided a visible clue to the tools of the State that something was up.

The MID now makes all that redundant, so there's no point in making it hard to give money to the exchequer.

Be sure to get and keep your receipt though.

[*] Tthere was a DfT consultation on doing away with the requirement to even issue insurance certificates earlier this year, which of course we all contributed to, right. Wink

Aye but....

Always take the paper to the man anyway to save you a double journey.
I have twiced not been permitted to buy tax on-line as the MID hadn't been up-dated by the mongs I bought the insurance from.
MCE on both occasions. (Phannies). Sad

And that is where the whole database system falls down.....
They can email a certificate or generate one online in seconds.... But link and update a active database is something else.....

Time that failure is a nice big fine. £5K a time should soon see the Ins co's make their systems work.

So you mean just let them get away with it then.... Lets hope you don't get a ANPR tug for it showing no ins then....
Soon that Ins cert will mean nothing to the PC on the street.

Still I guess you can complain to the FCA as they are regulated by the same mob as the banks and its £750 a throw if it goes to them....

A big Thumbs Down to the insurance certificate not needed.
It doesn't say if you can still use it, but no doubt it will soon got to MID only - which would be great, if it was accurate and updated promptly Rolling Eyes.

I believe that this was another initiative kicked off by Mike "the bike" Penning at the DfT before he got a punishment posting to Northern Ireland. Sad

Which was my response to the DfT consultation.

A physical certificate of insurance is the only way that I can actually prove that I'm insured if the insuramongs twat it up or the MID runs out of cheese. That's not my words, it's (slightly paraphrased) the Court of Appeals'.

Hi

Thought they gave up on having to renew SORN a couple of years ago, even though the DVLA carried on sending out the forms. Looking round seems it was announced a couple of years ago (link to Carol Nash article on it) but possibly not implemented. Found something else suggesting that the legal bits behind it were included in the finance act earlier this year.

All the best

Keith

This explains why I didn't get a SORN reminder about my Vespa. Pity the useless shower of shite didn't let us know.

When I were a lad, the grass over there was green! Surprised
