before you fit the new seals make sure tht the inside of the seal holder on the stanchion is free of corrosion and lubricated, this will help the new seals fit easier.i know one uy who swears by freezing his seals before fitting, another lad puts them in boiling water, but i think thi is not needed.
Follow 1888's reply and take care not to warp or damage he seal.
because manu fork seals use a steel clip/spring to hold the seal in there's usually some sort of electrolytic corosion due to the contact of alloy fork tube and steel clip.Any rot on the inside of the seal holder can be carefully removed with fine emery, just keep it very clean though. When replacing the fork seal holding clip/springs,cover them in a decentish amount of grease (NOT copper grease as this aids corrosion) to stop them rotting the alloy further.
While I'm at it I'd say ' Anyone for fork gaitors?' fork seals last three times longer when gaitors are fitted, just like a sealed chaincase on an old MZ or CG,A bit like Anne Widdecombe.......ugly but does the job much better than flashy rivals. ____________________ nearly a normal tax paying tosser.......with ferrileness suzi100,cg125,cb125scb100n,cb175,cd100,cj250t,kh250,c15,125 bantam, super 6,rickman gs750,xt500,250rs,dt175,lifan125,dolomite1850,metro,Morris220ld,morrisfg,leyland princess, range rover, corsa,vw camper .now struggling with legs. I removed this on my MZ because I thought it looked gash. I was a fool. A FOOL!
In the sealed chaincase it was basically a completely sealed light oilbath system, i used to check it from time to time, and it never needed any maintenance or lubing at all. Now its completely exposed and corroding before my eyes.
I think i must be getting old because i know it looks rubbish, but i wish they'd bring it back, at least for commuter bikes. I'm going to try to fit gaiters on my VFR too. I'm into bikes for the riding. Maintenance is a necessary evil!
