Ive discovered my triumph t140 I'm restoring has a small split in the rear mudguard. I could replace it for about £200 but I'd rather get it welded and rechromed along with other components (I already have reasonable quotes for this). I've included a couple of photos but what I'm wondering is whether I should drill a hole at the top of the split to stop it splitting further?

the crack should only get bigger if you have a lot of vibration going through it, and as its a brit bike, well enough said, it cant do any harm to drill the end of the crack just dont drill it too large a hole and make sure you are drilling at the very end of the crack, if you drill through and leave some of the crack on the opposite side of the hole the crack may continue further, you would be drilling the hole to relieve the stress which has caused the crack, the drilled hole leads the line of stress around the edge of the hole and back down the crack to it source, if you dont get the end of the fracture the lines of stress will just keep going, having said that, get it welded as soon as posssible and it will not need drilling

Easy welding job for someone looking to earn a few quid. Grind it back into shape afterwards and when it's chromed it'll be good as new.
