PostPosted: 14:44 - 31 Aug 2012    Post subject: Halfords Professional Socket Set Reduced Reply with quote

Just got one of those pointless emails trying to sell me a new car radio. On the upside the Halfords £99.99 professional (Lifetime Guarantee) socket set is reduced to £69.99. I am tempted but I have 90% of what it offers already:

https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_163079_langId_-1_categoryId_255215#tab1

edit: There are also loads of other tools reduced quite considerably. But this is the one that caught my attention.

That's a great buy if you're in the market. I would also get it if I didn't have all the tools in it already (that I need)

They've reduced the 120 piece kit too, £199 down to £89.99. Bargain.

I can't see the point in so called 'professional' toolkits, apart from the fact that most aren't anywhere near professional quality, a bog standard set will suffice for the average home mechanic. I'm still using a £19.99 Halfords socket set I bought in 1985, and it hasn't had an easy life.

I love my Lidl one. Think I paid about £35 or something for it. However this does have an actual lifetime guarantee which is pretty awesome.

Not really, wtf can go wrong with a spanner? I've never even had a ratchet fail in nearly 30 years let alone the spanners I regularly wallop with a club hammer to part rusted up bits on the Landrover.

You're probably right. Good selection of tools in there for the money though. Not seen Lidl's one on their newsletter for a while. If I do I'll post it.

Thing is you'll probably only use about 10% of those tools. I suppose it's a good deal if you're just starting out and have the cash to spare. Personally I started out just buying individual tools as and when I needed them, luckily there were a few tool shops nearby in the old days so I could nip out mid-job and get what I needed.

The Halfords range is of a good quality, I have had mine for about 8 years. It's a bigger set than the one that you have.

The only issues are:

1)Loads of imperial socket sets (I'm 40 been driving since I was 17, always worked on my own vehicles to some degree and I have never needed an imperial bit).

2)The spanners only go up to the low 20s in sizes. There isn't one big enough to take my rear axle nut off.

3)Most of the bits that are less than 20mm are for use with the 3/8" drive socket. Though this is fine for lots of things such as body panels and trim. They aren't strong enough for tight bolts. (Thus you'll need a 1/2" drive socket and bits as well).

I always some how need 2 sets of spanners, ie bolt and nut at either end, both have the same size head.

This is why I buy tools individually, kits invariably miss tools I need.

I got my Whitworths and such like from the auto-jumble at shows like the annual Enfield Veteran Vehicles show, those shows are great for old imperial stuff.

I have broken one of the sockets from my late 1980s Halfords socket set (cracked down the side), the UJ piece falls to pieces and the locating ball on the piece to allow an extension bar to be used as a small breaker bar isn't in place anymore. So yes things do fail.

On the other hand in theory these had a lifetime warranty but doubt there is any chance at all they would honour it these days

All the best

I would highly recommend the 120 piece set, and yrs they have honoured the guarantee on a piece that I broke.

A question to all of us with "lifetime guarantee" tools...

Where is the receipt?... Neutral Laughing

Personally, I think the halfords stuff is pretty good but I don't like 12 point sockets. 6 point or even better, 6 point surface drive would be a good idea if you are building a tool set from scratch.

Got quite a few Halfords Professional tools, seem pretty well made and have taken some hammer, especially the ratchet which has had a lot of use. Quite impressed by the quality.

A couple of the lads at work use Halfords stuff, and use it on a daily basis. They reckon its fairly decent given the price when compared to snap on etc.

If I was looking for a decent starter set I'd be tempted at those prices.

They wouldn't replace the ball lock on my long 1/2" extension bar because it was a "mechanical part"

I had planned to put it in a press at work and bend it, but I can't find it now Rolling Eyes

I made a point of keeping my receipt for the Halfords Pro kit. I love it, but I have no use for the imperials.

I bought this a while back when it was last on offer. It has easily paid for itself with the jobs is has done. And I have never been left halfway through a job finding myself without the right size tool. It's got all the essentials you need for basic maintenance.

+1 on staying away from 12 point sockets. I've gone through a number of 12 point sockets that "burst" when failing on rusted up nuts. For the larger nuts (10mm and above) I've gotten on well with a set of hardened 6 point 1/2 inch drive rated for impact wrench use; and a 1/4 inch 6 point set for the rest.

The only time I've used my imperial sockets is on American stuff. Things like RAM mounts and the like. I would guess you'd see them on American bikes too.

I had one of the allen bits in my halfords pro set (same one as the OP's link) snap. Took it into my local halfords, they swapped it for a new one. No quibble. Can't say fairer than that really. Thumbs Up

I don't like the 12-points though.

Id rather spend money on a decent set. I have a crappy set i use when my dad takes his tools over his house and its shit. The sockets seem to get stuck on bolts for no apparent reason and the ratchet never wants to work...
Oh and their not shinny like the other set Sad
