Hi,

Well because I binned the bike and injured myself, I have a lot of time off work. So I decided to begin doing all the things to the bike I couldn't do whilst I was working, such as head gasket, chain and sprockets.

I had to get a friend to help as I couldn't do much with a cast on, but hey ho it's finally been fucking done!

1) First removed the chain guard

2) Removed sprocket cover

https://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j69/willyrobbie/2012-09-07152454.jpg

3) Remove the nut and washer (after bending the metal back)

https://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j69/willyrobbie/2012-09-07152659.jpg

4) Slackened the chain adjusters

5) Removed split pin off wheel nut (to replaced another day)

6) Removed wheel nut

7) Removed split pin from chain and removed chain

8) Disconnected brake rod from the drum

https://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j69/willyrobbie/2012-09-07155852.jpg

9) Remove wheel rod and remove wheel

https://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j69/willyrobbie/2012-09-07163017.jpg

10) Removed old sprocket

https://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j69/willyrobbie/2012-09-07164735.jpg

11) Install new sprocket (put the teeth stamp facing towards the drum, hope that isn't a problem!)

https://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j69/willyrobbie/2012-09-07165712.jpg

12) Replaced wheel

13) Installed new chain and front sprocket, then lubed

Pretty pleased with myself to be honest!

Not a problem as that look an easy bike to work on but i would hook a chain up to the old one and pull it through and connect the ends. Leave it hanging to the side when taking sprockets off.

Well done though Thumbs Up

Incidentally, even though it's an MOT failure to not have a split pin, has anyone ever seen one of those nuts work loose? I never have.

OK I will check that tomorrow. I did spin the wheel and it looked OK to me, plus I checked the sprocket to see if was straight either side after noticing my mistake and looked fine to me.

By the way, head gasket is tomorrow. Thread to follow Mr. Green

Your sprockets didn't look too bad. How many km did you have on them?

Unless you a fussy bastard like me and like everything just right.

Having read your previous workshop thread regarding changing a gear cable, I think that you should indeed be lauded for sorting this out single-handedly.

Congratulations, you've started the epic and painful climb up the rockface that is the home mechanic's learning curve. May it prove fruitful, and slightly less excruciating than garage costs would be.

The previous owner stated that he had replaced the chain and sprockets before selling, but he must have replaced them with used sprockets or lied to me as they were worn. The chain kept jumping even after re-tensioning it.

I got the bike around 18,500 miles and I have done 2,200 miles since
