So I tightened the chain on my cg125 ( while it was on the centre stand) and thought it was ok, but I realized that the chain is extremely tight when taken off the centre stand and has a couple cm's free play when on!

What should do, and is this normal?

Should be about an inch or inch an 1/4 with the bike on the centre stand.

What's happened is normal but it's not right as Vincent said. The chain is at it's tightes when the axis of the engine output shaft, swingarm pivot and rear spindle are in line with each other, and that only happens when you are sitting on the bike. Since the shock will be fully extended when the bike is on the stand, that's when the spindle is lowest and the chain is the most slack.

Put it on the sidestand and set it to about 25mm total up/down play.
