Just wondering is there any way to set them off on the bike to change the lights, I've been in a few occasions where I've had to wait for another car or move the bike on foot just to carry on my journey Rolling Eyes

Really annoying so would be nice to hear if there is a solution out there Question

You could try riding over corner of the sensor, apparently it's able to pick up vehicles best from that point.

Traffic lights with the sensor on top of the lights can be triggered in the dark when you flash them with full beam. There is a set near me... I get a few meters from it, flash them, and they change which is nice. Smile Try it sometime.

I try to stop on top of the sensor to give me best chance of not getting bored and going on the red.

I don't get issues on the pan as being a huge lump of metal it gets picked up by the sensors easily,

Myth. Assuming the lights use an IR detector (rather than induction loop or simple timer) then 55W of headlight bulb isn't going to make a blind bit of difference when you are sat astride a 15/20/50/100 kW engine, which is a very effective waste heat generator. The effect you describe is called coincidence.

No, it not coincidence, every single evening on my way home from work, I flash these lights and it changes... except if there is a car the other side. You can be waiting at the lights without them changing, as soon as you flash, they change. And FYI, my headlight is 35w.

There are at least 3 different types of sensors that i know of. One is a camera which you can flash and pics up headlights. You can find these on some temp sets as well that are not timer only. Flashig from about 500m back will usually stimulate a change.
The next are new ones fitted round here to replace the light sensitive ones and consist of grey cones on top of both lights. Not sure if they are radar or ir but on roundabouts they dont pick the bick up at all due to smaller cross section/ angle of approach. Theres a red light on my way home from work i need to run every night as it crosses the primary route the lights are set for.
The last is a ground sensor which ive found i need to rock the bike over as one pass occasionally wont trigger it.

And finally sone lights are solely on a timer and continuosly cycle which on a 4 way junction with filters takes ages.

If this happens to you on a regular route, then have a moan to the council's road department about it. If not you, then who?

Also, MTFU and treat dumb machines and signs as advisory, not as a replacement for human judgement.

If you're going to wait 5 minutes then ride through a red, why not just ride straight through it? It's the same "offence" either way, it's absolute, and there's no statutory defence of "couldn't be bothered waiting". It's only a case of how likely you are to be seen and prosecuted, which is "not very", either way.

Don't take it from me, I regularly see the local Plod drive through reds when they can't be arsed waiting.

The ones on top of the lights that look like cameras are just IR sensors so flashing your light will have little effect. Just roll your bike back and forth with your feet.

Same goes for the sensors under the tarmac. Just roll about over them. It is the mass of your bike that sets them off, not waving your arms around.

I tend to do this at temporary traffic lights. If I can see the way is clear I'm not waiting untill a light changes

There is one not too far from me that won't change.

My procedure generally goes like this:

Pull Up
Wait a bit
No change
Is it safe to go?
Yep, I go.

Obviously can't do this on a set of lights which is monitored though.

This might be a really dumb question but how can you tell where the sensors are? Not come across this problem yet myself Confused

It looks like a rectangular tar line cut into the ground normally. Don't know about the IR sensors exactly, but it's the box above the traffic light.,

I suspect thats an american picture, but it is the same sort of thing. If there's a regular looking shape cut into the ground and possibly tarred over then it's a traffic light sensor.
