I would love to be able to practice motocross, and just had a thought (probably a stupid thought) that maybe it would be possible to get a road legal motocross bike, that I can get some practice on off - road, whilst continuing to ride on the road so that I am still able to work towards getting my full bike license.

Have any of you done a similar thing?

I know you can get green lane type bikes but I've been told these aren't really suitable for learning motocross.

Ah ok, I guess I'll have to either get my full license first or just save up for a second bike, will take a while but be worth it! Thanks.

Sure there's bikes out there. Crm 125 for a start?
Rx125? Etc etc. They are more enduro styled, but aren't far off what you want. Can still ride them on a cbt too.

You can convert pretty much any motocross bike to road legal, i have a road legal crf 250. Theres loads of pages on the internet about how to get them road legal, its not that hard at all. May be you'd have to wait until you've past your test before you convert one though as 125 motocross bikes probably have more bhp than your allowed to have while riding on a cbt.

motocross bikes, especially the two-strokes, aren't the best for riding on the road.

the 2t 125's kick out nearly 40 bhp which is obviously more than the 15bhp which is allowed on L-plates unfortunately.

The price of maintaining them is high as they use fully-synthetic oil, and need a piston, ring set and small end bearing every 20-30 hours of use to maintain the power from the engine.

Yes, they are 'far off' I'm afraid.
The CRM125 can be ridden on a motocross track, but isn't really suitable at all.
It's a road bike engine in a trail chassis.
It weighs maybe 40% more than a motocross bike, makes maybe 40% less power and all that power is quite hard to access.
(I owned a CRM 125.)

A full power motocross 125cc wouldn't be legal if you'd just passed your test and were restricted to 33hp. Definitely not legal on a CBT.

best way to get into motocross is to get set up with a bike and a trailer.

yes it is possible to road register a MX bike, many people have done it, but to ride them on the road you'll need a full unrestricted licence.

or as an alternative, get yourself onto a trailie 125 on L-plates and get out on the green lanes. Bikes like the DT125, KMX125 are good all-rounders, for riding on and off road. There's a KTM125 which is more biased to off-road, but not so reliable as DT's etc i've heard.

There are places to ride legally, if you look up the Trail Riders Fellowship (TRF) in your area, they'll give you loads of information about trails you can ride.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Think I might try and part exchange my current bike for a trailie 125, like you mention dangerousdave, then I can at least get a bit of off road experience with something like the TRF. Does anyone know if the honda xr125 is any good? Like the look of them.

Looked up the CRF 250 on youtube and it looks A- M-A-ZING. That will have to be my ultimate goal! (Very jealous of you having a road legal one Jake)! but good to know it's possible Smile - on a full license at least.

The xr125 is a competent bike and good for building up confidence. Being a four-stroke is also very reliable.

You'll find the two-stroke bikes are faster and lighter in most cases so a good combination for general off-road mucking about. Bikes like the DT125r '89 onwards are plenty fast enough for learning on with study frame and suspension. KMX125s are simular, bit lighter, suspension arguably not quite as good as the DT. MTX125s and TS125r are capable bikes too but a bit rare now. One thing to consider about the two-stroke bikes above is although they are cheap enough to repair are not as reliable as four-strokes like the XR125, but that's the price you pay for better performance.

Then after a couple of years on 125s you'll probably have passed your test and will be able to get a bigger bike. Or pull the restrictors out of the DT125 for double the power.

Not at all competent for motocross, far from it really. Fine for green lanes if you're riding alone or don't mind playing catch up/giving the bike some serious stick.
And I'd suggest it's reliable because it makes very low power per cc, not because it's 4 stroke. 4 stroke competition bikes tend to be less reliable because they are 4 stroke, not more.

The XR 125 only has a 11hp 4t engine in it which will not do more than 40mph up any kind of steep hill, plus its a commuter bike, not an actual performance bike like the rest of the XRs so is pretty much useless on anything more than light gravel/mud.
