I bought a new H4 OSRAM bulb, the clearer ones. However I've just noticed that the existing is 35w and the new one is 55w. I take it this is a no go then? As there would be an extra 20W load and the headlight unit is probably not designed for that extra bit of heat?

No don't don't do it, has the effect of a overload not only can damage your bike, can also brake the bulb, i suggest getting the correct one.

Just take the bulb in to your local motor shop, and show them the old bulb and they can match it up to a new one Thumbs Up

Electrically I'm quite savvy, which was why I thought the extra loading for wiring and the headlight can only handle the heat from a 35W bulb by design. I just wanted to confirm this was the case, which you've done. Cheers Thumbs Up

The main risk is overloading the cabling which can cause the copper to heat up and can eventually melt through the insulation. If you have a fuse specifically feeding the lights it may weaken that too. You've effectively increased the current demand for the headlight by 50% from approx 3 amps to 4.5 amps.
