I did a really reallly stupid thing. I over torqued two of the bolts holding my oil filter cover on. It was entirly my own fault, instead of checking the manual I 'remembered' the torque level for the bolts as 14nm. Of course after shearing the bolts I consulted the manual and its said 10nm. Luckily the bolts were standard M6x20 bolts and I had some in my tool kit and also enough of the bolts were left sticking out of the engine block to get a grip with some pliers and withdraw them. Otherwise god knows what I would have done. It just goes to show though that the old adage "measure twice cut once" or in my case "RTFM.....twice" is always appropriate. :-/

Well 14nm is an estimate as the lowest setting on the wrench was 20 but I moved the vernier adjuster around to loosen it to what I aproximated was 14nm. Another stupid move on my part.

Those wrenches are pretty inaccurate at the extreme ends of their rated ranges - let alone past them. This was a lesson learnt by shearing off the bolts on my own oil filter cover on my Varadero =_=.

You're better off just going finger tight, then another turn or two in until it's tight enough to seal, rather than trying to torque it.

I did this too. I've been far too used to tightening things up until I physically can't tighten them anymore.

This. After snapping one of the bolts in the exact same way as OP I was told about this technique. Works a charm. Smile

This is why I still use an old stylee deflecting beam rather than a clicky wrench, when I even bother to use it at all. It's an aid to mechanical sympathy, rather than a replacement for it.

you snapped 2 before realising ??

Agree these are not critical bolts so no need to torque i hear a lot of stories of snapped bolts whilst using torque wrenches. whats wrong with nipping them up with a socket/spanner ? you can tell when its tight..

Engine bolts and heads criticle aqreas etc yes use proper torques .

For a normal nut/bolt I'd do finger tight and then at least another 3/4 turn, unless it started to feel wrong. One or two flats would be too loose still, unless your idea of finger tight is different to mine.
