There are many attributes to consider when purchasing a new helmet - even more so if it's the 1st ever lid you will have bought.
A quick look through this may provide you with a little insight.

A £30 crash hat is as likely to protect you in an off as a £400 one. It might even help more, since it'll be a bigger shell with more of the actual keep-you-alive inside it.
It's your head, you have to decide. Pick one that fits and makes you feel all manly. Buy from the shop if they've been even remotely helpful. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Not saying that they have to spend £150 on it, i'm merely saying they should go to a shop and try on a range of helmets and see what is best for him. I think looking at getting ALL of that gear for £150 is a rediculous though anyway. And, they mentioned the budget for the helmet, with the possibility of getting gloves... Never said anything about jacket or trousers... |
it's not really a stupidly low amount to spend.
I mean, my gear cost less and its in no way 'bad' or 'unsafe'
£30 box bx-2 helmet, gets pretty good reviews everywhere, good sharp ratings,
meets the EU standard etc etc
£35 tuzo 'orka' jacket, was about £70 when they first came out, completely
waterproof, warm, comfortable, required armour and padding etc, I've had
jackets costing 5 times the amount that havent been as good..
gloves.. £10 out of the bargain bin at my local, akito mercury mega, toasty
and warm, waterproof, leather, Kevlar palms,.
so that leaves £75 for trousers..
they don't have all the gimmicks, carbon this, ligter that, thumb visor wiper
etc etc, but by no means crap or scraping the bottom of the barrel.
£150 on a lid? I'd never pay that, the lower end of the market is perfectly
fine, every helmet sold meets the EU standard.. just take a look at the sharp,
completely unbiased testing, where some of the biggest names came out worse
than the cheapest of the cheap. this alone tells you what your paying for. ____________________ ......................................................................... |

No, they all feel the same. About the only difference you may find is how noisy it is at speed or how well the airflow performs to keep your noggin cool on a hot day. A higher priced lid may have a washable or replaceable lining, pinlock accessories as standard, etc, but by and large a well fitting lid is a well fitting lid. |
The Schuberth S1 @ around the £250-£350 mark is "reportedly" the quietest helmet on the market - says who? = The guy who reviewed it, but I'd suggest that like most things, everyone has a different view.
There are other methods that help combat wind noise, one of the best I've found is a full neck curtain, not just the normal chin curtain. As people have suggested , it isn't essentially the mega bucks lid that is going to preserve your noggin more than a cheaper option, I have found the neck curtain to be a great addition, combined with ear plugs noise is considerably less. ____________________ I might not be a gynecologist, but I know a cunt when I see one |

I had a £50 helmet, which i absolutely loved. Was really comfy and i would forget i had it on sometimes (bit awekward when you go to put something in your mouth like i did once ).
Go try some on and dont let the price bother you. |
