PostPosted: 22:45 - 07 Sep 2012    Post subject: Insurance company that actually insure restricted bikes? Reply with quote

Hi folks, I have joined this forum in the hope to get a few answers to a few queries that I have regarding my sons biking future.
I my self am a biking vet of 30 years, but I have searched the www for certain answers, most to no avail Sad
My first question is, can anyone please suggest to me a specific insurance company that actual DO insure motorcycles that have been fitted with the 33hp restriction kit. My son (now18) passed his cat A restricted licence last year and has one year left before his restriction is lifted. He has one years no claims on his other bike as well as having his A restricted licence for a year.
So now he wants to buy a larger bike ( 750 Mv Agusta F4) that will be restricted to 33hp.
I have tried ALL the comparison sites but none of them have sections for restricted bikes. So I decided to try to call an insurance company Carol Nash in person, after 30 minutes giving our life story and wasting my time, they tell me that they will not insure a restricted bike ( although I heard different ). One often hears of larger bikes being restricted, but we're do people go for insurance?
So fellas, does anyone actually know of any companies that actually insure bikes that have been restricted to 33 hp Some one I can actually ring and talk to knowing they will insure restricted bikes......please Smile

Only had to insure a restricted bike once. All I did was go with the cheapest and named the 33bhp restriction as a modification and there was no problem with that. There won't be a section on comparison sites for restricted bikes as they are not a section, he still has a full license.

When using comparison sites just list the 33bhp restriction as a modification.

If I were you I would simply select the correct make/model from the list. You could always declare the restriction as a mod if you wanted.

You probably won't get any kind of reduction in premium from insurance companies for having a 33 bhp restriction.

(edit: pah- someone beat me!)

Thanks for your quick reply, however I have even tried to use the modification section of the comparison sites. But they do not understand/compute :rolleyes:
So that's why I want to actually talk to some one (insurance company) who knows what they are talking about so I can insure my son with little fuss.

don't you just insure it as a normal bike ? it's down to you to make sure the bike meets you licence requirements ?

I use gocompare mainly and there is a few options for restrictors

When going through the quote details,

in the 'Bike details section'

->Modified/adapted/option extras
->Select yes
->new window prompt will appear
->Select Engine/Transmission tab

Restrictor options are on the right.
I got quotes using that before I decided to do full bike license.

Yup, they have a big list of mods, most of which only put pennies on the quote, if that. And they don't charge for most mid-term adjustments. It's almost like they actually understand bikes and bike insurance! Wink

This link should get you £40 off.

Do be aware that they want to see copies of your license, although you can just email them a decent photograph of it.

That said, if you can get a better quote elsewhere without declaring the restrictor, I'd consider doing that, because in what universe could it possibly increase the risk that they're covering?

So what? Your opinion has no relevance.

You may have an unrestricted licence, his son may not. Therefore he would have to (legally) be seen to restrict his bike.

Don't let the the door hit your arse on the way out...

PS OP, try Swinton, in my experience they have been quite helpfull

Ridden a restricted GSXR750, wasn't that bad. He was keeping within the law that's all.

I never did, but its up to others if they want to restrict their bikes.

OP,usually I'd say H&R insurance, pretty cheap and accept 33hp bikes, just they are faggots and demand proof... see thread here > https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=253442

op can obviously do what he wants, but something like a rs125 with an exhaust etc for £1500 will make close to 33 bhp and be much more fun to ride than a 33bhp 120 hp bike, and you have to own one 2 stroke in your life

Thanks for all your replays, even the silly ones. My sons bike will be restricted, I don't want him taking the chance of loosing his (now valuable) restricted license. If that happens then he will have to wait 5-6 years under the new biking rules in 2013 to ride a big bike. All said and done as things are right now, he will be 18 going on 19 when his restriction is lifted and he can ride what he likes.
He has saved hard to buy this F4 and nothing else will do. He does regularly ride my Full power F4 and Hayabusa of road on a private road, so he knows certainly how to handle a big bike. He will still be keeping his 125 to compute to collage on, the F4 will only be for the occasional sunny days Wink
I shall try The links above thanks very much. However I do miss the days of just picking up the phone and asking for a quick quote. Now they won't answer a simple question unless they real of 100 question Sad
Though after paying over £4000 each for both of my sons car insurance at 18, insurance company's are right up there with the devil and bankers IMO Smile

colicabcadam - you are the last person on this forum to have any right to lecture others about misspent money. If the OP's son wants to restrict an MV F4, so be it.

33hp restricted MV F4? That must be embarassing! Surely a 500 would be a lot more sensible and easier to insure?

So does any one else think that it's " misspent money" restricting an F4???

How is it embarrassing at 18 riding an MV Agusta F4?? How does that work?
Why is that bike not sensible? One often hears about once you have an A restricted licence, then ANY bike can be restricted, bla bla, bla. So this is the point were at right now.....an MV.
What 500 bike would you suggest that has that wonderful Italian styling that we should be looking at?
