riding/living with 6v electrics

hey there, just picked up my first bike. it's got old 6v electrics, and just from running it round my neighbour's carpark i've noticed the light is going to be a problem.

on throttle it's good. off throttle its bad. on the brake and off the throttle it's 99% darkness....

is there any way to make this fine to use at night without being plunged into darkness every time i brake down a hill?

i'd be up for changing it to 12v if it made the light work reliably and not do it's own thing.

if it has a battery, why does it seem to drain all power so quickly?

I used to have a 6V Honda Benly.

The lights on it were good enough for motorway riding at night (ie no streetlights).

Is your battery knackered?

it has a new battery i'm told.

it's fine on throttle, very bright. so open road wouldn't be a problem. but in narrow, slow, welsh lanes off throttle down hill on the brakes, i think i'll be in complete darkness

would the alternator and charging system off a cg125 not fit? or be made to fit and run 12v.

My Cg was 6v, I rode it all year round to work and back.. 9:30pm-6:00am shift, So it was dark when i set off and dark when i came home..

I personally didn't have a problem, Besides.. Seeing where you are going isn't really the problem with 6v Electrics, It's if other road users can see you!

hmm i think it could just be a case that the battery is flat. the bike's been sat for a couple of months. mot'd 2 weeks ago (trailered there) and sat since then too.

and all i've done is run it flatter and there lies my problem. going to charge the battery and see if it "holds charge" for a decent period, as seems to be few people saying "6v does me through winter perfectly fine"

I wonder if it's legal to attach LED bicycle lights? If it's a decent bike it might be worth upgrading the electrics by converting it to 12v, on some bikes you can do it for under £100.
