My bike drinks and shits out oil (on the concrete and the exhaust) but that's another story.

It's mostly filled with Motul oil but can I buy some crappy halfords oil just to keep it topped up with? Money is tight til payday.

If so, do I need to use fully synth as well or will they mix fine if the cheaper stuff is semi?

I'd fix the leak.

On the oil front I have used Halfords bike oil for 8 years with no problems.

If it's cheaper oil just change it more regularly and I doubt you'd have an issue.

Hmmmm? methinks? If you need to ask that question then as a previous poster stated, you seriously need to address that oil leak!.

If it`s losing that much oil, where`s it going?

Out of the exhaust? = excessive smoke and fumes = a tug from plod Sad
or a possibility of all that oil catching fire in your exhaust Shocked .

Leaky engine gasket? = fking hell! your engine must look a state!
Hot engine + oil = plenty smoke/chance of fire/tug from pold Sad .

Leaking oil further down the engine/gearbox/clutch = how long till that oil finds it`s way to your rear tyre? = does`nt even bear thinking about Shocked .

I think you more than likely know all this already?
Maybe your bike is trying to tell you something?

Cheap Oil is fine but as a rule of thumb keep away from mixing it to much.

Get the leak fixed cheaper and easier even if you have to spend a few quid.

The main difference between cheap and expensive oil as it comes out of the bottle is... Well, not much really other than price BUT the more expensive stuff generally lasts longer and will take more abuse before it needs to be changed.

Since your bike is essentially changing its own oil as it goes, cheap stuff should be fine.

Okay thanks guys. What about semi and full synth mixing?

And yeah, when the bike is cold it smokes a bit. If I rev it hard it lets out a puff when warm. Otherwise there is a small leak on either engine case. I made a new gasket for either side and used a small bit of the blue gasket stuff on the lower edges of them. It is a very small amount though.

Drops from half to just under low in about two weeks. I will get it fixed when I get some cash though!

There is an argument for only ever using shit oil, but changing it more regularly. Too many times i've known people run something on old oil for ages as they're not willing to pay for the fancy oil they put in it last time.

Or worse, they don't bother to top the oil up and trash something mechanical Wink

All the best
