I'm a bit befuddled by this.

I've just noticed that the VIN on my CB's engine and frame don't match. The frame is PC32 (new model CB), the engine is PC26 (old model CB).

Definitely something I should have checked before - I simply checked the V5 against the frame.

Pretty much everything on the bike is in good condition for age.

I've had no issues in 4000 miles other than routine stuff (tyres, brake pads).

Why would someone swap the engine?
High mileage engine in a low mileage bike perhaps?

Probably knackered the engine through seizure or gearbox failure or something and would be better financially to replace than repair.

It has 7k miles, backed up by MoT's since purchase.
Unless the speedo has been disconnected.

How would you manage that? No oil?

Some Yamahas and Suzukis have matching engine frame numbers, like the RD series for example.

However, that is an exception rather than a rule IIRC so I wouldn't worry about it.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Hmm. Not sure I understand what you're saying here.
That it's unusual for a bike to have matching numbers?

Yes. They may not be similar or related in any way in some cases. The V5 for my VFR shows the VIN and Engine serials as similar, but not identical.

Don't worry about it.

Ah. I've just checked the V5 again, didn't notice that there were seperate entries for both before.

The VIN definitely matches, but the engine serial is different. V5 has a PC32 serial, bike has a PC26. So the engine has been swapped.

Interesting. All I can think of is that someone must have forgotten to oil the original engine and had to replace it, the 'new' (old) one has given me no problems.

Are the PC32 serials for the VIN and Engine identical?

Bear in mind, this is the DVLA. Im pretty sure i've seen cases where the V5 shows the VIN and engine numbers as identical, but the actual serial number on the engine is in a completely different format. They've just copied the VIN in there to fill in the form, or they lost the engine number, or it wasnt supplied to them.

If the VIN and Engine numbers are both PC32 numbers, but they're different, you might be right about the engine swap. Is that a major problem?

No.

It doesn't bother me significantly, I'm just curious as to why the engine has been swapped, and how many miles this one has. The serial number suggests that it's from an older 1990's bike.

It means that my assumption (that I can put another 50-100k on the engine no problem) might be wrong.

The bike has given me no problems, so we'll see how things go.

Even if the engine has 50k already, you probably still can, couriers use them so must be able to handle high mileages. If its running fine its all gravy.

Just make a mental note to check the engine number and ask more questions when buying your next bike. And possibly update your V5, although I'm not sure how hard that will be. I've changed the bike colour on the V5 when I had the MZ resprayed, and that was pretty easy, but I don't know if the engine number would be a more serious business.
