 |
|
So figured i should start this at the beginning of the project otherwise there'll be too much to keep up with by time its all done and dusted!
This will be a long term, rolling project, with hopefully only a weeks work max to be done at any one time - i cant be without a bike for too long or i get a bit angry....
So, heres the bike just after i got her home sunday, 2004 Yamaha FZ6, circa 20k miles, needing some minor cosmetic work and a bit of an overhaul in terms or tyres, brakes, chain and a service etc

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/20121014_140959.jpg
So, heres what iv been up to this week, all pretty boring stuff to get her ready for an MOT and on the road, as this will be a rolling project, and my daily transport!
Started stripping her down:
https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/20121014_160711-1.jpg
removed pillion footpeg hangers from subframe and sprayed satin black.

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/20121015_105513.jpg
Removed the stupid stickers
plastics repaired and sprayed satin black ( left some excess fibreglass on one side panel to strengthen the join, covered by seat anyway so not visible

Bellypan modified - work in progress pic!
https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/20121019_155834.jpg
Fitted exhaust
new air filter, oil filter, oil and plugs - check out how minging the old one was!
https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/20121016_173111.jpg
New tyres
New mudguard
New number plate
Brake caliper clean up all round - resulted in one snapped slider on front left caliper new one should be picked up and fitted tuesday
Thoroughly cleand and lubricated chain
Replaced bicycle speedo with a working one
Found a chain adjuster bolt had snapped off in the swingarm, so had that off and had a local engineering place drill it out and helicoil it. exhaust system had to come off to facilitate swingarm removal, and as usual with a Yamaha, one of the exhaust studs snapped, so having that drilled out and helicoiled Monday.
So, monday will be getting the stud sorted, spraying the fork lowers satin black, and poss the bars/top yoke too if i have time!
Tuesday should see me with new brake caliper, along with a full drain and refresh for the fluid and a set of Standard clocks.
Thursday should ( fingers crossed! ) see her on the road!
Future plans:
New rear end... million and one things going through my mind, would love to fit a Diavel rear end, but budget may not allow this!
R6 front suspension swap
R6 rear shock
R6 swingarm
Tail tidy
Custom exhaust
Decat
Power commander
K&N filter
and much more i have yet to think of!
Updates will be small and possibly far between, but hey im'a get there in the end!
Will definately post an update end of next week, hopefully with good news!!
cheers for looking! |

Great bikes these, love mine to bits.
Will be watching closely, I quite fancy the R6 fork conversion.

Nice looking prject you got going on there
Can I ask, what handlebars and risers are they off? They look pretty similar to my Tuono.
Have you ridden it yet with the new bars and risers? What did you think of the weird position? ____________________ Current Bikes: ZX7r 97 (Black Beauty), VFR400 NC24 (The banana)

read it again.... they are already gone! lol just dont have any pics since i removed them!
Bars are on standard risers, position feels odd to me as i came from a Thundercat with clip ons, but sure ill get used to em! considering a straight drag bar, or maybe even some Z bars at some point....
Dom - i paid peanuts for this one as it was a bit of a gamble... i knew it ran, but also knew it potentially needed a lot of work, i gave £850 for the bike, and has cost me about £450 so far, maybe another £1-200 needed to get her back to roadworthy and useable. so certainly less than £1500 on the road T&T'd |

Thats not a bad shout for £850 mate.
I paid 2500 for my 06 with 6k miles on at the time. (about 5 months ago now). It had about £1k's worth of extras on too, so I was rather happy

i have a set of renthals kicking about somewhere, but ( and no offence intended here) i just think they look too common on fighters. No arguing about the comfort factor, but purely from an aesthetic POV id rather go down other roads.
Talking of bars, i took the gold ones off today and sprayed em black, also sprayed the fork lowers black, drilled 20mm holes in my stock exhaust baffles to give it a bit more of a motorbike sound, rather than an asthmatic hoover!
Bike is prepped ready for stud work to be done tomorrow, then hopefully she can go back together for the last time, fit new caliper and clocks, bleed brakes, check torque's on everything iv undone, and off for an MOT! |

Well, Got the bike MOT'd on wednesday, so she is now on the road
Got the bars and fork lowers painted black, as well as drilling 2 x 20mm holes in the standard cans baffle.... should make it sound a little less like an asthmatic hoover and more like a proper motorbike! Either way its a temporary fix, i just refuse to spend £500+ on a set of aftermarket cans when i wont be keeping the stock tail anyhow!
Gorgeous standard clocks.... bloody pricey but at least now i have diagnostics and fuelling adjustment abilities!

Ghetto temporary clock bracket...

And the bike:

^^Apologies for the utterly crap picture quality, pics were taken at dusk on phone...^^
today turned out to be a bit of a mad day, but still got an hour on the bike. Wanted to fit a new light as i really wasnt feeling the enduro headlight that was on there, especially when my mate said it looked like a 125 from the front because of the stupid headlight!
So, i grabbed a couple of brackets off a mate, and a couple spare headlights off another mate, and had a play...
First up twin car foglights, bolted together Dommy style:
https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/20121026_122011.jpg
Then a square double light, tyred it down low:
https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/20121026_122730.jpg
then up high:
https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/20121026_132025.jpg
In the end i went with the square light up high - tidied the wiring a touch to keep it out the way, and pretty much left it at that! I have still to make a more permanent/tidier mount for the clocks, and have started chopping up the old enduro light to use as a fly screen but that will need glass/filler work to get the desired shape so wont make an appearance for a wee while!
Couple pics of bike as of this evening to leave you with as doubt ill get any time on bike for next week or two as mrs is in to be induced on Sunday!

so, Life has been busy lately and not had much time to work on the bike... But i have made some changes here and there, most notably paint ( in a cold, dusty, draughty garage, with rattle cans ) :
masked up engine, fork legs, tyres, bungs, etc:
https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/20121218_094252.jpg
First coat goin on:
https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/20121218_111953.jpg
first coat dry:
https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/20121218_143950.jpg
another coat or two and i left her looking like this:
https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/20121218_152115.jpg
And a close up of the finish (again, bare in mind this was done in my dusty cold garage with cans!)
https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/20121218_152205.jpg
So, not perfect, but overall im pretty stoked tbh! also painted bars, yokes, fuel cap and various other bits, and modified the humongous standard hugger to something a bit smaller although thats only going to be a temporary thing anyways as the R6 swingerarm and hugger will be used soon as i have the time n cash to press forward with the next stage of the build. |
