Hi guys

Finally bought my first bike last weekend. There are a few minor issues with the bike which I'm wondering whether to have a go at fixing myself or get it done in a garage since I'm a complete novice.

1) No light on speedo - I'm guessing the first thing to check with this is the bulb? Then after this check the wires are all still connected and haven't fallen out but could anyone tell me what tools I need to get in to the speedo and whether it's a difficult job?

2) Front break lever sticking - When using the front break lever it works perfectly from 0% in to about 10% and 20% to 100%. The issue is from around 10% to 20% compression the lever doesn't seem to click going back so the break light stays on. To get it off I have to squeeze the break further in so it clicks on the way back and then the light goes off. Is this difficult to fix and what could be the issue?

Do these issues sound easy enough to fix or should I take it in to a garage seen as I've just bought it so they can give it a good look over?

Sorry if these are basic questions but I'm sort of trying to teach my self as I go.

Almost certainly a bulb, unless your other lights don't work. It runs off the same circuit as your headlight.

Don't know the models specifically, but should be easy to get at, just a couple/few small bolts. You might find you don't need to take the speedo off at all. The bulbs normally sit in a rubber grommet type thing that just pulls out.

It's probably catching on something. Have you had an off? Probably just needs bending back into it's proper position, photos would help.

Well all the other lights on the bike are fine so I'll have a go at removing the speedo bulb tonight and try to get a replacement asap.

I don't think I explained the front brake issue very well. When i pull in the lever all the way and then release it i hear a small click which is when the brake light turns off. If i pull in the brake lever by 10-15% then there is no click when it is released which means the brake light stays lit. My mate was having a look at it last night and he said it could just need some WD40 but I've also read that it could be the spring inside which has got full of gunk?

When i get home I'll try to take a video of what I mean and post it up here. I thought waiting to have enough money for a bike was bad. Now she's sat in the garage and I can't ride her until I have insurance sorted and have fixed these small issues. Its absolutely killing me!

Just sounds like the lever is gunked up. Kill it with WD40 and try again. Thumbs Up

Hi,

I've usually experienced brake light switches to be of the "push to break" variety. Essentially there i a little black switch behind your brake lever which when pressed, turns the brake lights off and when released it turns them back on.

I experienced the same issue as you're having with a relacement brake lever I bought. Essentially the problem is that the "tab" part of the brake lever which presses the switch is marginally too thin for its job. The reason that it works when you compress the lever further is because the lever will spring back with more force, so it wil sit at a position marginally further back than if you had released it at 10 or 20%. You will also notice that if using it at 10-20% and the brake light stays on, pushing the lever forwards with your hand will turn the light off.

My solution to this problem was to get some gaffer tape and stick some to the tab part of the lever; between the lever and the switch. What I did was take some tape and folded it until it was a square maybe 1mm thick, then taped it to the lever.

4 months down the line the solution is still working for me.

I can grab some pictures if you need.

Just the part which comes in to contact with the switch. Pics attached to this post:

My first thought on brake light issue was the micro-switch at the lever.

First try WD40 although might be an issue if non-standard replacement lever used so not contacting correctly with switch.

If that's ok could be the switch. However, it is working and intermittent faults are always difficult to track down. So if cannot be resolved by WD40 or looking at lever point of contact might be worth replacing the switch itself. Replacement can be from breaker or have a look at the likes of WEMoto or even David Silver (do a google).

The bulb should just pull out. You then remove bulb from connector, replace bulb and reinsert. I'm not sure on the model but you might have to remove clock underside plastics to get at them (should not be hard, if it is then look again at what you're doing). IIRC Honda CG service manual pdf is available to look at/download (again do a google).
