Has anybody fitted a digital speedo ( the type meant for bycycles) to their bike?

The speedo drive is going again on mine and I refuse to buy another. I've seen a few bikes around the net with them so they must work but how it the magnet fixed.

At least the milage wont go up any more.

I've searched for this on Google before (just out of interest), there were some problems with some bike speedos not working after 75mph, so it's best to find out which ones work to a useful speed before buying. Also try to ensure that the sensor cable will be long enough for your motorbike.

I also read that wireless ones might not work, due to interference from the engine and possibly due to the extra distance on a motorbike between the sensor and bicycle speedo. Also you may have to upgrade the magnet yourself so it can activate the sensor from further away. My magnet clips around the spokes on the wheel, and is then screwed together. I read a lot of people glue/epoxy theirs onto the wheel - bear in mind that it could fly off and hit you, or unbalance the wheel possibly.

You also have to take the placement of the sensor into consideration more on a motorbike (e.g: the distance from the center of the wheel) because, say putting it on the outside of the wheel it could go past too fast for the sensor to trigger. Another thing is that the tyre expanding due to heat may affect the accuracy.

A big problem people find is the cable from the sensor to the speedo can snap easily, so look for ones with a nice thick cable like my Enduro has, it also came with a twisty plastic cable cover to save it from abrasion. I read some Sigma ones do up to 150mph. A backlit speedo would be useful at night, as well as a waterproof one if they exist.

It would be pretty cool though having the functions of the bicycle speedo, my 'Cat Eye Enduro 2' (£20, for my bicycle) has current speed, average speed, max speed, 2 trip meters, clock, timer and an odometer. A useful function on mine is that if you lose the data due to a battery change, it'll let you re-program the total distance back in. One thing to remember is that you'll need to program the circumference of the tyre into the speedo, the manual for mine had lists of standard bicycle tyres and also how to just measure it and convert it.

i'm at the stage where I am putting one of these sensors to my Kawasaki KH100, and haven't had much luck. I used car body filler (lol) to fix the sensor onto the fork as the sensor needed to be fixed strongly and slightly nearer the wheel than just fixing it with glue on the fork would allow. It doesn't look great, but I can always shape up a smooth finish using more filler and whack a bit of paint on.
On taking it for a test ride I got to about 49mph when the speedo stopped working, slowing down again brought it back to life. I guess its because the magnet isn't strong enough at this speed to run the speedo properly and is probably worth upgrading.
At the moment I need to do this anyway as the magnet flew off into a bush somewhere soon after this, probably due to my rush to test the thing and not fixing it on properly. Oh well, we live and learn. Anyone else know anything about these? My speedo packaging claims up to 160mph, and i've heard of others fitted to bikes that max out at 175mph., not that theres anyway of verifying this on a kh100 (ha!)
Hopefully I will find a good replacement magnet soon, so I can finally stop riding in all 30 and 40 limits in top gear as thats the only gear I know roughly how the Revs per minute convert to mph.

Cheers, Jonathan

I have a yamaha TZR125 byke, when I accelerate it to 5000rpm like when im in my 3rd gear it speeds up to 30-40 but it dosent go any further the power valve dosent seem to open up @ the right time
but if I turn the accelerator to full throttle @ that speed within few seconds ,the power valves open and it starts to speed up

but i have cleaned the carb and tuned it ,installed a new air filter, burned the carbon in the exaust, can u please give me a reason why its not speeding up...

Hi

It is a 2 stroke. To get it to run quickly keep it in a lower gear and rev the bike harder. Most 2 strokes have a flat spot at about half peak power, and plenty will not pull through that flat spot in a high gear.

All the best

Keith

Speedo's gone now, so I'm going to fit a sigma speedo, reads speeds over 100mph it should work fine. SM riders use them and they seem accurate enough. Hopefully it will last longer than aprilia speedo drives.

My gixxer had one on it when the fella before me bought it because the speedo was in kms. Don't why he didn't get the the mechanical thing is beyond me. Unless it holds top speeds etc.

But it should work.
