Need help, changing fork seals. Manchester area.

I've taken my front right fork off the yoke and I've got the dust seal off, i've released the damper bolt, but I can't undo the fork cap.

The bolt is the width of the chrome stanchion. I simply don't have anything big enough to get it off.

Anyone able to help? I need a hand getting the damn thing a part.

Don't be tempted to use anything but a snug fitting socket - those caps, if they're ally, mark up and round off very easily. You're best getting them loosened off while the fork's still in the bike. Do you have a decent vice, (as in a metal clamp, not something bad that you do} What size are the caps?

I'd guess at least 30mm I can take a measurement.

Once you've found the right size socket, stick the fork back in the clamps and retighten them, loosen the cap and then remove the fork again.

If you do decide to use a vice then use something to protect the stanchion from the rough vice jaws.

What's the bike? If it's the CB125 and it's not too late, I've a set of seals you can have for nowt, then you can spend that money on a new socket. They're about 4-5 knicker on eBay

The bolt is flush with the stop of the yoke it isn't raised like the Honda ones. I'll work something out.

I'll get a portable work bench to use as a vice.

If the leg can't be pushed higher in the yoke then how about just using the bottom clamp?

I could try that, just don't want to bend the yoke. But it's worth a try.

I doubt you'll damage the yoke as your "twisting" the fork rather than bending it. Did you get a socket then?

Put it back in the yoke and undo it, far less chance of fucking it compared to if you use a vice.

When you get the damper rod out, let it drip off the excess oil for as long as possible, you'll be surprised how long it'll drip out for. Clean the inside of the leg out with a rag too.
Most important - when you slide the new seal down the stantion, cover the stantion in cling film and oil the seal. It's very easy for the seal to get damaged on any rough spots as you're sliding it down.
