"Dear Parents and/or Carers
I am pleased to be able to write to you at the start of the new academic year with the fantastic news that this summer’s GCSE results were the best we have ever achieved. This places *** Community College Academy Trust amongst the highest performing schools in ***.
It is vital that we now endeavour to build on our achievements by continually looking to raise standards across the Academy by supporting students in aspiring to be the very best that they can be.
As you are aware, in late July I sent a letter outlining the Academy’s uniform policy and within the letter I informed parents that we would be introducing a Senior Detention. This after school detention is intended to provide an immediate consequence to unacceptable attitude and approach to academy life.
Examples of when the detention would be given include instances where students:
arrive to the Academy inappropriately dressed;
wear the Academy uniform in an inappropriate manner during the day;
arrive late to the Academy therefore missing the start of the day;
disrupt the learning of others or display poor behaviour during lessons.
The detention will be completed on the day of the issue and may last up to 60 minutes. Parents/Carers will be informed if their son/daughter is to be the subject of this detention so that necessary arrangements can be made for the late finish to the day.
It is hoped that the implementation of this sanction will continue to raise whole Academy standards by supporting important policies that maintain our ethos of excellence, aspiration and respect.
As always, we are grateful for your continued support in promoting and enforcing the Academy policies. Should there be any exceptional reason that prevents your son/daughter from attending the Senior Detention, please do contact the college so that staff can be made aware of this.
Yours faithfully, ***"
My reply:
"If my child misbehaves (disrupts the class) you can inform me and I will deal with it.
As for infractions concerning school uniforms...if you think my child is going to be denied her liberty because she wore the wrong shade of black trousers or her tie was tied too short you really do need to get a grip on reality, because it ain't gonna happen bud. She's there to be educated, not to conform to some nazi-ideal dress-code. Go seek professional help; anyone capable of sending out such a communique is clearly in need of it."
My daughter: "You're a nutter." ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |

It may be a little early to Godwin the dialogue with your daughter's school, until she has her escape route to the adult world planned. Why not just tell her to laugh it off and walk out when the bell goes, then deal with it if it happens?
Plus, have you considered that she may rebel against you and get a job at the Inland Revenue? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Schools are a joke these days, A guy I work with was saying the other day that his kids lunchboxes get checked and if they have any chocolate in there it gets taken off them! Why should everyone be punished for other peoples bad parenting who are feeding their kids rubbish?
Since I've left school/college I've become very cynical of the system, I'm currently 21 and was taught "With an education you can do any job you want and be whatver you want, worlds your oyster". What a load of bollocks! I personally don't think they should teach so many subjects once you hit your final 2 years, if you have shown your good with your hands then you do electronics/woodwork/graphics etc. If you are better academically then you only o academic subjects.
Trying to tell people they can do any job they want echoes 'The American dream' which is anything but that, it's who you know not what you know. ____________________ |--Previous--|:2007 Aprilia SX50... --Current--|: 2007 Kawasaki ER-6N

When my parents split up we moved back to Belfast with my mother. She was really struggling during my last year in school finacially and my school bag broke so I started using carrier bags for the last month or so of school.
The school sent a lovely letter to my poor mother with words along the line of "Your son is breaking school policy by not carrying around a proper school bag and this must be rectified or he will face detention and possible exclusion from school." My dear mother sent a lovely letter back saying the following:
"I am a single mother on benefits and receiving no money from the childrens father. I have to spend £1.20 a day on busfare to get my son to school as, according to your bus pass scheme we are 2.9 miles away from the school and not the required 3 miles. I also wish to inform you that there is less than 1 month of school left before my son leaves to sit his exams where he will not require a bag. If your school's policy states that all pupils must have a school bag then by all means buy him one to use for his last month at your school."
My mother got a letter back saying sorry and she wont be forced into buying a bag for the last month.

At my stepson's school, the detention is timed to ensure the kid misses the bus home. The schoolbus leaves the school 20 minutes after school finishes. Detention lasts 25 minutes.
My conversation with the school was pretty much as follows:
ME: "So, why would a kid be given a detention?"
THEM: "For being disruptive in one way or another usually."
ME: "Right, and the detentions are timed to cause the kid to miss the bus and cause maximum inconvenience, is that right?"
THEM: *waffling* "...but yes, we want the child to understand consequences."
ME: "Why aren't they longer, when I was at school, detentions usually went for an hour or so?"
THEM: "Neither the school budget or insurance allows for students and the staff needed to supervise them to be onsite after 4pm."
ME: "So, given that school buses are intended to deliver kids to their homes safely and avoid having them wandering the streets around town after school, your strategy is to release a proven disruptive child unsupervised, having ensured they would miss their bus and would be at maximum stroppiness?"
THEM: "..."
ME: "No. If you want to discipline my stepson for infractions of one sort or another, fair enough. He's no angel and I agree most kids need to be pulled up short sometimes. What you don't do is make him miss his bus home. Find another method. End of discussion."
THEM: "..."
I really don't object to the kid being discipled at school. I know the kid, he isn't a bad kid, but like any sharp teenager, he's an opportunist. There is a difference between discipline and spite though and timing detentions so a kid can watch his bus turn out of the driveway without him isn't discipline. ____________________ The Old Apprentice |

School was bullshit,
towards the end I learnt more going home.
Which I did, they even gave me detentions for not coming in
(which I didn't go to, badman.)
Did my GCSE's, and never saw them again
It was the petty rules that pissed me off, cant remember the worst of them at the moment.. tucking my shirt in though ____________________ 07' Honda Hornet now full powaah! My guide on performing an oil change! |

Any school which deliberately caused a pupil to miss their usual 'safe' transport home is failing in their duty of care. If it happened to my child there'd be hell to pay. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

And we wonder why teachers have no control. seriously when are our kids going to learn how to behave when they can count on their gobby parents to justify why they should be treated differently to every other pupil. Most kids I see in schools today need a regular punch in the face. ____________________ Do not presume that I am male. |
