Backfires and cut outs when restarting after brief stops

I have just got a '99 SV650s and rode it back 35 miles after purchase, had a huge grin, got the Mrs to put on her leathers and grab her bike so we could go for a ride together and within a mile had a loss of power and as I approached a roundabout and changed down got a big backfire. Had to change down to 2nd due to traffic on the roundabout and it just cut out. Started again with a little choke but then cut out when changing down again. Limped home and left it for a few hours and took it out again, no probs, stopped again for 10 mins and when I got back on it again same thing, backfire's and cut outs , Ive checked the tank vents and they are all good - any ideas??

Has it got a manual choke? Is it on?

Is this your first bike after passing your test?

Could you be making the mistake of using the choke every time you get on a bike?

Yes first bike since passing my test, Very possible that I am making the basic error of leaving the choke on, ill give it a go tomorrow and see if it is the normal newbe error, I have text the bloke who I got the bike from who is a really genuine bloke and he never had the issue so more than likely me and not the bike. Thanks for the response as confidence is easily knocked when you first get started.

Just a silly thought, I had a F650 BMW with very similar symptons, and spent weeks cleaning carbs, airways, etc etc.
Turned out to be knackered spark plug caps.................
Just a thought, but your circumstances and symptons sound the same.
Running along, things a bit cooler - no problem.
Restart and ride off / traffic, things a bit hotter - problem
