The gremlins are showing themselves on the new (19year old) bike.

Girlfriend out on the bike the other day. Did about 5 miles and the bike went dead. No power at all.

Turn the ignition on and nothing, no lights, no click of the starter motor, nada.

Back home on the rear of a truck.

I set to checking all the fuses and found the 30A main starter solenoid fuse had blown. Replaced this and as soon as I attempted to place the solenoid lid back on, pop, it went again. This is with the ignition off.

Ive traced the wires from the battery to the solenoid and all looks good. I have also traced the wires from the solenoid to the ignition and can see no scorch marks or areas where the wire could be grounding. All earth wires I can find look secure.

Then I checked the regulator and found this:-

Is the regulator toast?

Could this be causing the short in the main fuse?

Advice welcomed...

Rumps.

Most certainly, that reg/rec is very poorly mounted and as such cannot get rid of the heat it generates which is likely to have caused the problem. You will need a new reg/rec which will need to be correctly fitted, also check out battery and bottom ac coils prior to starting the bike and disconnect the battery asap.

Disconnect the reg-rec to isolate it, put in a new fuse and see if it all works.

The bike should start and work fine without it connected. Obviously it won't charge up mind you, so don't ride it further than you are prepared to push it!! Wink

I think it is best to test it this way before buying anew Reg-rec that you may not NEED ...

Thanks guys, I appreciate your advice.

Could a bust reg/rec actually cause the main 30a fuse to blow though?

I tried looking at the wiring schematics and it would appear that it may well be the culprit.

I'll disconnect the reg/rec tomorrow and try another fuse.

Best place to purchase another one?

When i got my NC30 the 30A fuse and reg-rec were both toast, it had also killed the battery. I bought the reg-rec from david silver spares for quite a bit of cash. I later found out that they are the same reg-rec as CBR600's used during some time period and that they can be got for about £35 on ebay. The better ones have a metal case with fins on to dissipate some of the heat.

Some people have also done modifications to their reg/recs to add a fan on to them to help keep them cool.

I've got no idea how effective it is, just throwing the idea out there.

It works, but the original ones lasted about 20,000 miles. The improved ones last much longer than that, though how much longer i don't really think anyone knows. So adding a fan to one of the improved ones is probably just adding more complexity for no gain. Cool though.

I think shereen advised getting a new one on your last post with this bike Laughing

You can move it to the left hand side of the bike behind a fairing vent, will get some cold air there and mount to the frame to remove more heat Thumbs Up

Does anyone know where I may be able to pick up a regulator in the Leeds area.

Ive tried Startrights and despite their website saying its in stock it is not.

Any other places I can try?

PostPosted: 08:26 - 23 Sep 2012    Post subject: Bandit 400 popping a fuse Reply with quote

My bandit recently started popping fuses. My bikes symptoms included throttle chocking itself when raising the revs. Popping fuses after a fair ride out, especially when stuck in traffic. Before this hapened she would pop, fart, bang, refuse to move fast, and also go down to three cylinders. Arful, i would let my bike calm down, and suddenly she would play with the idea of working from one day to the next.

I changed a coil that i found was shorting on the frame, as their was exposed ht lead. I also checked my cam, and had my carbs balanced.

The way she was acting was almost like i had bad carbs and a bad ecu!

HAha my bike almost had me fooled..;.. turned out my radiator had been wired wrong!!! Meaning my thermostat wasn't working. Altered the wiring and now she is a superb little runner/!

Lesson : Check your wire routing!

If you doing a tiny bit of wiring etc, I do believe the R1 or R6 regulator can be retrofitted to any Hondas (someone correct me if I'm wrong). But these are diode units and the chances of them failing are second to none, although they are quite sort after for this reason and as a result a little more expensive than a Honda one.
