I've just got a new sprocket & chain set for gsxr but don't have a chain riveter.

Is there someone within a reasonable distance (50 miles) of salisbury who would lend me one / let me fit at theirs / come here with it to let me use it.
Whatever works is fine with me or can i just muller it with a hammer and a nail?

Or could I just put in a spring/split link joiner and take it to a shop to get them to sting me for the pleasure of joining it properly?

You could try VP Motorcycles up at Old Sarum - his charges are reasonable.

I got my chain cut off with massive bolt cutters

and put the new one on with my fingers and some mole grips
chain riveter is unneccesary depending on the chain, mine was a DID set

you just push the bars through and push the clip thing over it, simples
been a few months, had no issues Thumbs Up

was this type thing

Funnily enough, I've just ordered a chain riveter. Unfortunately I'm a good distance from you.

I could potentially mail it after I fit my new chain, probably cost £5 each way though, I imagine it's going to be a heavy piece of kit.

Split link chains are generally fine for 125's.
They're not recommended on bigger bikes because the link is weaker than the rest.

Any evidence to support that? The link should be just as strong as a rivet link, I've used them on quite a few big bikes and never had one fail yet.

It was actually a typo

Shifty

Wouldn't have got a split link if i'd realised it was one beforehand, didn't trust it at first, seems legit though

'Weaker' is probably bad terminology.
More susceptible to failure (if both are fitted correctly) would be more accurate.

Quote from my CB500 Haynes manual:

'Warning: NEVER install a drive chain which uses a clip-type split link.'

I wouldn't be surprised if they were fine, but a snapped chain is not really something I'd want to mess with.

I just use a big lump of steel bar behind the chain, held by another person, then twat the soft links over with a hammer.

was always told to use a rivet like on a bike with hp Laughing

file off and and use a round nosed hammer with a support to the back of chain. My riveter cost 30 off ebay but i snapped it in half Rolling Eyes

I also read that Split Links weren't as safe as a rivet link, and generally not a good idea for anything over 125cc.

'The Internet' seem to feel that there is a 60hp limit on rivet links in some countries.

I can't seem to find any data to back this up, but the 500 twins are about on that boundary.

Contrary to my opinions before having a split link, I think they are fine for anything 600cc or below. Although mine was an old FZR600 it still shifted, and I did 7,000 miles on a split link with no issues at all.

Like any chain, keep it oiled and adjusted correctly and you shouldn't have any problems. Wouldn't ever have a split on a thou though Laughing .

Not quite sure why a clip-type link would be more likely to fail due to excess power than a rivet link? Presumably all the clip does is stop the side plate coming off, which is exactly the same as what the rivet heads do in a rivet link. The clip itself won't be transmitting any power.
