Hi all...having somebody in this weekend to reinstate our fireplace. Dom has been to pull the gas fire out and set off a smoke bomb in the chimney. It was going dark but it appeared that smoke was coming from both chimney pots....does this mean it needs lining?? Need an idea how much lining will cost including fitting...anybody on here have any ideas??

It may just be that the chimney's mid-feathers have failed. If you don't mind heights then you may get away with just the cost of a bucket of mortar.

It means that there's a leak between the flues which casts doubt on the integrity of the masonry. It'll need lining.

It's not a massive job nor should it be particularly expensive. There are a couple of ways of doing it, one involves removing the pot, dropping the liner, fitting a top clamp and plate and reinstating the pot. The other is to use a suspending cowl which involves dropping the liner through the pot and fitting a special cowl that clamps the liner and is in turn clamped to the top of the pot. The second is obviously less work than the first. The bottom will either need a register plate fitted (the bottom of the liner clamps to this) if you're fitting a stove, or a gather if it's going to be an open fire.

If you're in England or Wales, it has to be reported to Building Control and has to comply with building regs or has to be fitted by a HETAS registered installer and an installation plate fitted in plain sight - it'll affect household insurance if it isn't done this way. In Scotland you can crack on and do it yourself if you're confident of your skills (I did when we installed a multifuel stove) or get a builder to do it. Self install isn't hard but wrestling several metres of stainless steel liner at height isn't a trivial thing.

Whichever path you choose, buy and fit an CO alarm. Thumbs Up

Edited to add:

There are three types of multifuel liner available made of three stainless steel grades. 316/316 has the cheapest type of steel on both sections (inner and outer) and typically has a 10 year guarantee. 316/904 has the cheaper steel on the outer section and a higher quality (acid resistant) on the inner and is typically guaranteed for 15-20 years. 904/904 uses the higher grade acid resistant steel on the inner and the outer and is typically guaranteed for 25-30 years. The price per metre reflects the quality.
