Hi guys! and ladys! First post from me! i don't exactly post much anyway.. BUT!

I passed my A2 license test last year, on the 21/9 to be exact! Now i know that the law/license back then stated that i would be restricted to a motorbike with a power output of no more than 35kw for 2 years, after which i would then be allowed to ride a bike with as much power as i wanted.

Now, the new license/law states that if you pass your A2 license test after the 19/1/2013 then your restricted to a bike with a power output of no more than 35kw until you pass your A license. I read that YOUR A2 LICENSE DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY UPGRADE!

theres my problem, when i passed my A2 test it would automatically upgrade after 2 years, allowing me to ride whatever i wanted. But now after reading about the new law im unsure as to whether my license will still automatically upgrade or if i will have to take my A test... I have tried using google and i do plan on ringing the DVLA and/or whoever else will clear this up once and for all for me, But its too late tonight and im worried now!

You passed under the old rules so that's what will apply to you. They didn't rectoactively change existing licenses

Nope. You passed your tests on the old UK specific definition of an A2 test bike. It's just an unfortunate co-incidence that there's now a European wide classification of A2 test bike and A2 license. But those are completely new, and different to the old scheme.

So you have an A license with a condition on it that you can't ride anything more than 25kW (not 35kW!) and 0.16kW/kg for 2 years.

None of that has changed. You don't have an A2 license, you never had, you never will. You'll upgrade automagically after 2 years.

Just be clear on exactly what license you have (A <= 25kW) because Plod and insurers won't have a clue.

Hi,

I am in the same boat as the OP (I passed my restricted licence test before the 'change')

Now I cannot find a list of eligible bikes that fit the 25kw category. All I can find is the new list of bikes that fit 33kw.

Is there a definitive list anywhere?

Many thanks in advance.

Nope. Not one drawn up by the State, because there was never a need to identify 25kW test bikes.

There isn't a lot that's natively 25kW. Off the top of my head:
YBR250, CB250, CBR250R, Ninja 250, those Superdream fossils that Teffers is always on about, Honda BROS 400, Enfield Bullets. All of the Chinese branded 250/400 bikes. GPz305 is more or less 25kW - buy mine. Wink

Really though, I'd recommend that you get a 500 twin or bigger, and an appropriately convincing piece of paper that says that it's been restricted to 25kW.

Here's few examples:

However, as others have mentioned, since you've passed under old rules, the new ones don't apply to you.

Hand Those are the new 35kW A2 bikes. The 25kW limit is lower, but perversely lets you restrict any bike, regardless of its original power.

As Roger said. There are 25kw (33bhp) restrictors available for most bikes, including Harleys and sports bikes like the R6.

Great! Thanks guys.

I do like the look of the GPZ305. Can you still get spares for them? Belts for the belt drive, etc?

Consumables are available from WeMoto and there are plenty of salvage parts on eBay. Belts are a problem. You can convert the belt drive to sprocket and chain, although getting the front belt pulley off will likely require fettling up a tool.

I do like mine, but I'd suggest that you have a read of this thread and ponder the description "a hand grenade looking for a war".

Don't buy one if you can't afford to leave it in a ditch. Wink

Old Thread Alert!
