So my CBR has given up the ghost yet again. Assuming it's the stator as that's the only thing i never checked/replaced the last time.

So, bidding on one on the bay, and hopefully that should sort the problems. Gonna go over it with a mate to make sure everything is as it should be.

Now, i'm going to be buying a new hornet - waiting on the dealer getting back to me about finance deals, so i'll be fixing this up if i get it running again, and turning it into some form of mental stunter streetfighter that i can mess around on.

Something a bit like... this....

https://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q41/XxMustang281xX/Facebook/FOR%20SALE/120518_004.jpg

The subframe on my bike is modified slightly for an R6 tail to fit onto it, so i could get a race type tail fairing, and fit a 12 o'clock bar to it. Who knows, this could turn out pretty epic.

We shall see.

For now, i'll be fixing the issues, then i'll get onto cleaning it up Thumbs Up

Dunc

So i made a bit of progress today.

I've re-routed all the cables so they hook up to the switchgear, and also re-routed the electrics so they sit under the coils (next to the fan...).

Stuck the old battery in just to make sure it wasn't the problem, and it started up...

I'm gonna have to test the whole charging system as something isn't right with it. But at least i know it's working. new battery, new stator, and at worst a new reg/rec will be needed I think. It's been put on hold till next month because i'm having to pay out £300 on the car this month Rolling Eyes

Anyway, gave it a quick wash. missed a few bits but it looks better at least Laughing

After i've sorted out the wiring and charging system, all that's left to buy is a headlight. gonna be a crosser style one because they are cheap and easy. rarely ride at night so the quality of the light isn't really much of an issue. Once the light is done, all that leaves is indicators and we're all set!

Mate test the voltage on the battery (while bike is running) with a multimeter.

It should be reading nearly 14v at idle. If its something like 12. Or 12.something then the charging system isnt working. I don't think I've ever had a regulator/rectifier die so I'd look at the stator plate.

They are cheap from wemoto, and are a piece of piss to fit (just time consuming, dropping engine oil etc)

My gs500 had to have it replaced, cost me £58 and worked perfect after that.

If you want to eliminate the rectifier from the equasion you could try disconnecting it I guess and testing the pos and neg that would lead to it from the stator, it should read something fairly high. Espesh when revved. (near 17or above when revved I believe) If its below then its the statorplate.

Thumbs Up

Cheers Thumbs Up

Well the state of the previous reg/rec...

https://sphotos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/556672_3618095304765_1124786594_n.jpg

This model of cbr is prone to them failing due to them having no cooling capability.

I just assumed it was the issue and replaced the whole loom and bits and bobs, but never touched the stator...

Now it's failed again, i know that's the problem as it's the only thing i never replaced last time. I've fitted an R6 reg/rec which seemed to solve the problem.

I've got a clymer manual here which shows the resistance that should be between the points in the stator, so when it stops raining i'll head out and test it.

That Reg/Rec Shocked

Out of interest, is there particular models of R6 Reg/Rec which can be used?

You seem to be getting there though Thumbs Up

I think the older ones have 5 pins, which matches the one on the bike. you do need to bodge up the wiring to it.

The newer ones have 6 pins (one i'm using). If you need a hand wiring one with 6 in, give me a shout.

Got the bike running again but i'm not gonna be using it again till i can get my hands on a decent multimeter so i can test everything.

I'm thinking it might have just been a dodgy connection, but i'd rather not take any chances.

https://sphotos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/s720x720/255357_3959137190599_1587823344_n.jpg

I'm using parts off my other bikes and what i've got laying around in the shed, so it's coming along nicely for me having spent £0 on it since it last ran.

From what I can tell, worst scenario i'll have to buy a new stator and fit that. not difficult, just a pain in the arse. Gives me an excuse to change the oil and filter anyway.

I'll also have to test the reg/rec. Once i've got my hands on a multimeter i'll have to check the stator, check the reg/rec, make sure the battery is okay then just go over everything with the multimeter.

I'm also quite happy i just found a 5L unopened bottle of castrol 10w40 oil so i'll be using that when it comes to change the oil. In the same box was a set of iridium plugs, which i must have bought ages ago and never bothered fitting.

Worst thing i've come across so far is a stripped thread on one of the bolts for the RHS coil (1&4). might helecoil it, might just secure it an easier way. not decided on that one yet Laughing

Anyway... shopping list:

Multimeter - £20
Tyres (diablos... £140 a pair in these crap sizes)
Stator - possibly - £50~
Reg/rec - possibly - £50~
Battery - possibly - £30

Then i start to dream and look up other things...
BROS 650 single sided swingarm - £100~
VFR750 hub/sprocket carrier/brake - £100~
VFR750 wheel (180 rear tyre - perfect) - £50~
GSXR600 front end & modified top/bottom yoke - £200~
R6 Tail - £30~
But then we know that isn't actually going to happen.

So i need about £300 to fix this completely, once and for all.

Probably better scrapping it.

Rolling Eyes

Oh, i forgot this.

Pre 2005 model R6 reg/recs are 5 pin Thumbs Up

very common mod on the CBR 400's seems the problem persisted on the 600F's which is a shame.

& Dunc if you start giving up don't scrap it..........RAT BIKE!!!! Very Happy

You can't count tyres as a cost, they're consumables that need replacing during the normal course of things anyway, so REALLY you only need to spend £150!

Yay! Laughing

So I got tempted and ripped the bars off (the cables are all too short - need to buy longer ones for those bars to fit) and put the clipons back on.

https://sphotos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/s720x720/599995_3963781866713_31827014_n.jpg

Took it for a ride. Sounds VERY good without the two tubes going into the airbox.

It rides abolutely fine though, i can't tell what the issue was, so i'm assuming there was a dodgy connection somewhere.

took it out for a half hour, checked the battery and it was nice and cool, so doesn't seem to be the same problem.

The reg/rec was absolutely roasting though.

Move the reg/rec to an area where it will get better air flow or get an old computer fan and stick it on top and plumb the wires into the ignition. Or even better, both.

Dunc...

Prolly you've fixed it by now but the reg/rec of the 95-98 CBR600F3 is a straight swop and it's the type with the heatsink, so it might help.

I now have one of these on my RVF as mine was like yours and was getting a bit frazzled.

Thumbs Up

Looks like the issue was a dodgy connector. done another 500 miles over the last couple of weeks and it's been spot on. not a problem Thumbs Up

So... shopping list now:

Tyres £? speaking to a breaker mate that might get me some part worns

While i'm there i'm also gonna see if he's still got the bits from the GPZ500s streetfighter i had. If he's got the speedo and bars, i'll be having them.

2008 R6 race tail fairing £70. shall be cutting the subframe down a tiny bit as it almosts fits, and will look pretty damn good.

Then i might go down the route of getting a single sided swingarm and some USD forks. We'll see how much cash i have.

Thumbs Up

Dunc

Edit: ALSO... Bars or clipons?
