Hi

I have been riding my Honda CG 125 for over a year now to work...every day. The commute is only 20-25 minutes one-way.
Last winter, my hands almost froze though! I have all weather gloves, and the wind chill in winter made it a big struggle. I was wearing thermal gloves, and then my motor-biking all weather gloves on top, but that didn't help at all. I somehow made it through the winter, but I don't want to go through that again, as sometimes when I made it to work...I just wanted to chop my hands off!!

So....I have looked at winter gloves on ebay, and there are lots advertised there as thermal/windproof/waterproof for less than 30 quid.
I have also considered the handlebar muffs.

What would you recommend I get? If I keep my current gloves, but get some of the handlebar muffs, will this be ok?

Thanks

I think it's the wind chill that makes it so bad, I would say get some of those hand guards that you put on your handlebars if you can for your bike, I reckon they would help loads. My boyfriend had the exact same problem last year, doing 80mph down the motorway at points and an hour long journey, by the time he got to work he said he was nearly in tears with the pain in his hands Confused

Heated grips or heated gloves are the answer. I've been wearing my winter gloves the past week but my fingers still get bloody freezing...and its not even that cold yet!

Im not going to bother on my 125, but I'm going to go for heated grips when I get my first big bike.

There has been talk of muffs in another recent thread (this one).

From my post in the "Serious winter biking attire" thread
map wrote:
To repeat other posts on this for winter recommend the 2 finger lobster style gloves (e.g. Hein Gericke Pathan, on eBay here, there are other makes).

The fingers together keep them warmer and there is less surface area on the outside to get cold. A good design and I've never felt the urge to have heated grips or muffs.

A good few years ago rode the 100 odd miles back from the NEC bike show in November with a mate. Went back to mine first and he was frozen. Lent him my Pathan gloves for his ride home (50 odd miles) and he loved them. The following week he'd bought his own.

Looked on eBay for other stuff last night and found M&P on there do the lobster style. Two makes, one I didn't recognise and the other Buffalo, might be worth a look (or check the M&P site as well).

HTH Thumbs Up

Last winter i wore two sets of thinsulate gloves and even that wasn't good enough. The wind chill is the biggest problem and the pain i got after a ride was unbearable. Looked into heated grips but its the top part of your fingers/knuckles etc that get the wind chill, not the palms. Maybe worth spending that little bit more and getting something along these lines...

Yup, tried and love:

Arrow Zoidberg mitts.
Arrow Heated grips. You don't have to splash out, you can get basic heating elements and shrink wrap rubber that mount over your grips (i.e. get the heat straight to your hands!) for just a few £££ from China.
Arrow Hand guards.

I find that liner gloves actually conduct heat away from my hands. I've tried cotton and silk and both made things worse. I'll give latex a try.

Since I can't fit guards on the GPZ, I guess it's time to get wrist deep in muff. Being a cheapskate, I'm minded to just bodge something up from some vinyl and a manky old flokati rug that I have lying around rather than spank £40 on Tucano muffs. Wink

i know the feeling, my hands wern't usable for a bout an hour after getting off the bike in winter last year. I've got heated grips on the 125 but they drain the battery too much and only heat the palm of your hands leaving the back of the hand and fingers still icy cold.

I wear a pair of cheap gloves under my bike gloves but might give a silk pair a try after pay day

Muffs are great. Keep wind and rain off your hands, add heated grips, then let yourself worry about the other stuff getting cold Smile

Nothing competes with heated grips. Except possibly heated gloves.

Last year I used my winter gloves, some woolen gloves underneath and those diesel gloves to try and keep the wind out, was still bloody cold.

I spent £30 on some heated grips for the fazer and cursed myself for not doing it sooner, difference was huge Thumbs Up

Wotcha.

Hand guards are the way to go. Keeping the wind off is half the battle.

Thats my thinking, esp since i have the gortex gloves, and do only 20 miles est journeys.

Also considering the pathon 3 fingered ones, supposed to be very good, with the fingers and air interacting etc, and gortex lining.

Even in said gloves in winter, cold sets in FAST.

Having just got new grips, i,m reluctant to get the heated ones, the RNG ones looked ok with good reviews, but 'seemed' not as good as renthal race grips etc.

Looking at the 30 quid renthal hand guards, as need the non bar end ones. Thumbs Up

Fitted these tuther day to what will be my winter hack & noticed a huge improvement already.

Granted, will still require good gloves to get full benefit.

Having seen the cost of heated mc gloves- quite a varied range & many seem £100+ I'm thinking of ordering these as an alternative.

They would still allow a good pair of gloves to be worn over them, whilst saving a few quid @ same time Thumbs Up

You can get cheap electric Chinese grip heaters for under a fiver delivered on ebay.

Got to be worth a punt?

I guess either option would be worth a try at those prices.

Yup, I fitted those to my 125 and they worked fine. Because they sit on top of the grips, they actually got the heat to my fingers quicker than the heated grips fitted to my other bikes. Recommended at the price. Thumbs Up

Ok, if those are tested and trusted, even on the same bike I ride, for that price, I'm in. Roger - the electrics look more than a little exposed. Were they a problem in the wet?
