what bikes could I get that could be used comfortably while being restricted and also awesome when the restriction is lifted.

all that I am aware of are sv650s and hornet, which friends/other half have told me about. I'm interested in modern bikes, so i can use them for years to come.

I've got my Module 2 next week and I'm feeling confident.

The SV is awesome, I've had mine two years now and it is nice to take the restrictors out, it feels like a completely new bike.

I think something like a 600 Bandit would prove worthy. Also your're better off with a carbed bike rather than EFI. A carb restriction will still allow you full throttle while EFI's are easier to restrict with an ECU swap, but don't run as well and cost more to restrict. The Bandit isn't a hugely fast bike anyway, but even restricted it will provide plenty of grunt. This is just my opinion and be aware I might just be full of shit Rolling Eyes

All will do the job nicely restricted Smile

modern / newer bikes will cost much more than the average SV/CB/GSF
Such has ER6 and the XJ6
Do you mean modern looking or modern technology like ABS ect?
Nothing wrong with a SV Laughing

My GS500F handles the restriction fine and is cheap to insure.

By 2 years time you will be bored of the bike and want a new and faster one anyway so after restriction power isn't too important in my opinion.

Surely a restricted EFI wouldn't be THAT bad, as the ECU would still try and compensate.

And my restricted 96 bandit hits 90 restricted, which more than you'll need anyway.

I've had my Bandit 650 up to 110 indicated, theres more than enough power there to ride on the road. Pulls well up to about 75 then takes a while to go any faster Thumbs Up

Yeah, I've heard Bandits are good too. In fact the other half has one and he loves it.

By modern I mean the year so around 2005+ really. But I'm not too fussed. I'm not all too bothered about the speed, I'm no speed demon (but having the choice of going awesomely fast is great too), as long as I can get to and from Uni and Work without being pushed around by wind and side winds from lorries... oh and the ability to over take lorries without holding up traffic is awesome too Razz As for restrictions, I've only got less than a year till I'm 21.

Thanks guys, I'll definitely look up those ones. The ER5/6 looks quite nice.

2003 onwards for a "Pointy" SV650 Thumbs Up

The exact year of this one. So good example are around, even if they were first off the production line Smile

I doubt you'll be able to get a pointy sv for 1200, but still worth a try Thumbs Up

As said above any of the standard bikes everyone restricts (hornet, sv, bandit, gs500, cb500, er6) will have more than enough power to get you round lorries without holding up traffic, they handle the road better so less wind blowing you about and if you've only got a year till you're 21, you will only have the restriction on for a year Thumbs Up

Not correct.

You're restricted for 2 years from the date you passed your test.

I swear that's the case but if you turn 21 before the two years are up the restriction comes off?

You are restricted for two years of the date you pass your test, age doesn't come into it.

At 21 you can do the Direct Access.

I know people who are over 21 and were restricted to 33bhp for two years due to not been confident enough to do the Direct Access route.

Fair enough, i always thought if you turned 21 during the restriction then you can take the restrictors out. Silly me Embarassed

From my limited, but growing knowledge. If you turn 21 next year, that would preclude you from doing DAS as you would need to be 24+ from next year, wouldn't it?

Correct.

FWIW the BMW F650GS / G650GS is also a good bike to restrict. Single cylinder so very torquey - has loads of grunt even at 33bhp. Quite a big, heavy bike though.

Depends what you want to do with the bike.

If its weekday general riding and then going for faster blasts at weekends, something ok on fuel and comfy would be ideal. ER6F or Versys...something like that.

I'd take on over an SV, not overly impressed with the bikes suspension at all. Seemed fairly cheap but hey, whatever takes your fancy.

A CBR600F should keep you entertained on 33hp and after that

I have a Yamaha YZF600r restricted, I rode it without restriction and tbh It still feels awesome at 33bhp just a bit less acceleration and top speed. It will still do well over a tonne. Who wants to go that fast regularly anyway?

Got mine for £1200 with only 14000 miles on the clock and it is a sexy beast Thumbs Up

Cheers, guys. I'll be sure to check all those bikes.

As for what I'm going to use it for? well, mainly commuting as well as a nice bike to ride on lovely days. I commute to work and to Uni which are both on opposite directions, one further than the other. SO really, I need something extremely reliable (especially because there's no other type of transport that can take me to my job[public transport wise]).

I agree with Paddy.
If reliability is the most important then it's worth to pay a bit extra for a Honda. CBF, Hornet or the new NC700 seems to be a good choice.
