My FZ6 [ABS model], has areas of corrosion on both silver finished fork legs.I know yamaha bikes have a track record of these types of problem, but the Bike is a well looked after 2010 model with just 8k on the clock since new.
Spoke to Yamaha about this but they intimated this was to be expected & were not interested as the Bike was now outside the warranty.
The AA agree with me that in these circumstances the corrosion appears to be very premature on a late model Vehicle in its otherwise immaculate condition & low mileage. The AA can prepare a report at a cost but i do of course have the option of removing the front wheel /mud guard & prepping /resurfacing the lower fork legs myself. If i take this option has anyone out there used a Hammerite or other similar product that would do a reasonable fix on it.
It would also be interesting to know if other late model FZ6 owners have had the same problems & how they were resolved. ____________________ Dave H. |

It is one of the areas exposed to the brunt of rain and road salt.
You can probably get them powder coated, but they are only fork legs. I could photo mine but they might make you cry/break your screen |

Hi PADDY,
They may only be fork legs but i'm the old fashioned type who thinks it's a good idea to keep on top of corrosion before it takes a hold. I owned an FJ 1200 for 20 years that was sold with the same unmarked fork leg surfaces even though I had ridden in some severe winter conditions on it.
Modern Bikes are more technically sophisticated but are they as well finished ?. ____________________ Dave H. |

Newer bikes, some seem to have real cheap paint finishes |

Best thing, if you're really picky is to remove the forks, take them apart and send the legs off to be powder coated.
Might as well do new seals and oil while you're there too.
I can't say I've suffered corrosion on mine, and thats an 06 with 12k miles now. Although I do cover with WD40 vigorously! (making sure not to get the brake discs of course). ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Lacquer is only a problem when you apply it to unkeyed bare metal as it won't adhere that good, it's fine on paint.
As said hammerite smooth can give a good finish though it is better from a rattle can, silver car wheel paints are also good, I did mine a darker grey and then lacquered which gives a more durable finish.
