Cleaning fazer downpipes??

Hi all, I'm about to take delivery of a fzs600 - Monday actually & although the downpipes are sound they would really benefit from a good clean up as the pic shows.
I've never attempted this on any bike before & therefore would be grateful for any tips or advice offered on how to get a better look.

I'm not expecting nor after a showroom finish, but just a decent clean up after which I'll be fitting a bellypan to hopefully help keep some of the coming winter's crap & salt off them a little.

they look fine to me? maybe go over it with high temp bbq paint if you really feel the need, but they look fine

Short off taking them off for a work shop clean up try Duraglit and/or Tcut, fair bit of elbow grease would be required but plug in some music to your ears and spend a while on them, whithout going hell for leather and taking your time it can be quite relaxing, or as Rob Fzs suggests high temp paint, have fun

Tbh rob, it's simply for the job of helping keep some weather off them or I probably wouldn't be considering it.

I will be doing a fair bit of motorway disatance over next few months etc: so thought it may help

i just covered everything in acf50 and let mud cover the downpipes and they were good as new when i washed all the shit off when it started to dry up outside.

Well I've got endless tins of acf50 so may well just go down that route after all Rob once I've used a little wet & dry on them.

Could you recommend a good rear tyre for it please Rob as on mot it was an advisory & whilst it may have 3000 miles left in it possibly, I'd feel better getting it done now with the amount of travelling I have to do next 3-4 months.

i have pilot road 2 front and rear on mine, can't fault them and no signs of squaring off after 4k miles, might be cheaper now pilot road 3 is out, £220 for the pair fitted

I don't think the downpipes on the Fazer of that era are supposed to look like metal. They are supposed to be painted black in high temp paint IIRC.

Polishing them up might ruin them...

When I had my Fazer I used to coat them and the engine fins with some black BBQ type paint - it came up really well.

You will love the bike, so easy to work on.

High temp bbq style paint it is then.
forget about the wet & dry - as pointed out will prob do more harm than good.

i always ran basic old qualifiers on mine, no complaints, they don't suit every bike but they're cheap and suit the fazer

downpipe's go underneath on the collector part not the tubes, try and avoid the delkevic replacements as they're not as good as motad

True, it's not as if it's a shiney new bike & even if was it won't stay that way for long in winter regardless of a strict cleaning regime.
Will apply lashings of acf50 & just due regular checks on all throughout the winter months.

If you apply ACF50 to your exhausts, it will burn off every time you run the bike, so you'll be forever recoating them. And you'll have to deal with the smoke of it burning off, which will stink.

Oh, and ACF50 is labelled as "explosive" rather than "flammable".

So long as you don't damage the current painted coating on them, you should be good.
